New Forum

Q. Has anyone at hoopla got even the most basic grasp of the fundamentals of human computer interface design?

A. Would appear not.

Willy.

The new personal profile listing has lost member location info.,  can we get it back please.
Its nice to know where a person is located for numbers of reasons, avoiding language misunderstandings for one & it becomes almost a need to know when discussing some specific topics.  It doesn't need to be compulsory, but a clue like country, region, county or city would be good to have back in the list - please.

Well spotted Mike, I would like to see the location feature back too.

Quelle surprise! Initial impressions are favourable. The larger font size is a bonus for old farts like me, luckily the hearing is still excellent.

  • Fonts are too big
  • Take Action button is not ergonomic UI because of the Reply With Quote is buried in there

Just taking a first look at this new layout and the most obvious waste of space is the single line rule at the top of every post - alternating post background colour with the 'darker block' means this is superfluous to say the least!

Like many others, I dislike the enormous waste of space.  You spend ages scrolling, not at all user friendly.  Bring back the old format - you could see much more information on the screen.  The new font seems to be fainter as well - big does not mean better!

I must have simple tastes. After an initial shock at the new layout it works fine. It's quick, easy to read, and very stable.

Yes to both, and...

1) now using the condense code as a partial workaround.

2) yes, why on earth would this be buried as the last option on that list?

Big fonts, wasted space, scrolling ....

My desktop uses XP with google. When I reduce the zoom for my Naim forum bookmark google remembers it on successive visits while leaving all other pages at the normal zoom. Some consolation there, but I've had no such luck for the Windows 8/IE 11 browsing on my notebook.

Aha ! There have been some improvements in the last few minutes, with Padded Cell now promoted (at last!) to the top menu.

I still think that it deserves an icon though...

If this carries on , it'll look just like the old one.

Posted on: 09 December 2015 by Steve J

That's good but I find I'm spending less time on the forum as the new larger format makes for eye fatigue with all the bloody scrolling.

I think it's much nicer than the old one. The grey bars have made all the difference. Now we can see which post is which. The left hand menu has gone green too!

I think that it's much nicer than the old one ..

For the members of the forum with a background in IT (like myself) can you imagine how daunting it must have been for NAIM to have upgraded this forum ?  This user community is primarily comprised of literate, conservative, silver backs .. not a demographic known to embrace change .. I think NAIM have done remarkably well and my hat goes off to them.

There are far more important issues to get annoyed about .. this morning at the breakfast table I was idly reading the label on my bottle of HP sauce when I saw right at the bottom in bolded text "Product of Holland" .. I've lived in the US for 33 years now and no-one told me of this change .. Holland !! When, how ?  Is this just an export bottle I have or does the domestic bottle have it too ? Please check and let me know.

I have nothing against the Dutch, fine gin and without them no-one would ever have heard of Max Bygraves but how did this happen ?  It's British, always has been ..

I can feel a strongly worded letter coming on ..

Still the same problem with the cursor not dropping in 'my' part of the reply box when using a quote from someone else, see above...

quoted, cut out majority, cursor would only 'drop in' John Wilmott's quote, not outside, useless unless you want to misrepresent someone else's words.

All replies are now indented the same way, much better now.

I am not sure why we need Blocks in the Formats drop-down,  the script used on a forum is not formal & the need to have pre-formed paragraphs etc. is not really required.  I'm sure we are all able to make our own paragraphs when required & it would actually be easier to get by & take up less page area without paragraphs
Or if the Formats feature can't be removed,  can the Bock section be defaulted to "Div"
-   Do we have forum consensus on this ???

Yep, it's a pain. The workaround is to write your reply first (even just a couple of words) and THEN clean the quote to focus on the bit you're replying to.

I mostly browse the forum on a mobile device and the new format I'd a real pain in the eyes. Like others I'm spending less time on here.

With the old forum there was the option to switch from the mobile version to use the desktop version. Is that still an option?

Just checked and my UK sources bottle of HP sauce also originates from the Netherlands.

Regards,

Willy.

trouble with living in the outback of the wild west is that news travels slowly. The brand was sold off to the Dutch about a decade ago.

Don .. I really appreciate the feedback .. could I be accused of being a pedant if I thought it more appropriate for the bottle to say "Made in Holland" as surely it's a Product of the UK ?
