Upgrade nDAC crashed!

Posted by: Santi on 05 December 2015

My nDAC upgrade failed and the nDAC is currently in an undefined status (all presets are lighting up). The initial firmware verification showed the following code:

During the upgrade all preset lights started to light-up but then the process appeared to crash.

After the failed upgrade de following code was read:

Is there a way to initialize the apparatus and to force him back to read the software on the USB-stick?

Thanks,

Henri

Henri,

I've put a shortcut on this topic through to Naim Tech support.  However, it's the weekend so maybe best to give them a call on Monday.

OK, thanks for your advice.

Sorry to hear that the upgrade went wrong! While you wait for technical support, you could try one or two more USB sticks. And perhaps try the rear USB port if you have been attempting at upgrading from the front port. My experience is that the DAC is a bit fussy when it comes to USB sticks. It even happened to me that, after upgrading to 4.10.6, the DAC would not be able to read the USB stick I had used for upgrading! You also seem to have a very old bootloader version. Have you tried reinstalling your current firmware? If nothing works, just be patient: once the upgrade is through, you will be very pleased! Good luck, nbpf

Santi,

I seem to recall there is a way to force an update.  Take a look at the nDAC manual.  Also, maybe try loading the files for 4.10.6 first, then if all is well, load the 4.11.8.

Good Luck,

Charlie

I had been wondering about this. For those of us still running the nDAC on its original FW, is it advised that we upgrade to the recent FW first before upgrading to 4.11.8? Or can we upgrade to 4.11.8 in one go without any perceived problems (usually)?

TIA

We tried to update with different USB-sticks, from the back as well as at the front alternatively also with the 4.10.6 version but all without success. The reason is because the nDAC is in an undefinied mode. When started-up the 5 Push-buttons are lighting up all together. What is needed here is that the nDAC is forced to reset (or reboot) so it is being forced to read the software from the USB again. On the forum I found how to do it with the DAC-V1: pushing  button "1" and "3" simultaneously (https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...dsd-firmware-upgrade). Unfortunately this doesn't work out for the nDAC. I have double checked the manual but this doesn't mention any reset ability. I guess I will have to wait for the Naim Tech support, hopefully they can help?

Have you tried switching on the nDAC with the USB key inserted?

Posted on: 05 December 2015 by Richard Dane

Santi, the forum is not the best place for tech support - you may get lucky, but best is to make direct contact with Naim via e-mail or phone.

Santi,

Try this:

please try a forced update procedure
by pressing the dock and 4 button simultaneously on power up. When doing this all buttons should blink 4-5 times just after power up. When the buttons have stopped blinking and are ON the unit is ready for updating i.e. this is when you insert the USB stick (v4.10.6) with the update files.

Hi Charlie, yes the procedure works. Unfortunately the procedure ends similar as during the first upgrade attempt. I guess there is something wrong with the upgradeabilty of my nDAC. The only solution left that aI seen is to contact next week Naim Tech support.

Thanks everyone for your encouraging advices.

Santi, you may have to use the rear USB port to perform the update.

The combined upgrade software is less than a megabyte (yes, mega) so I would try the smallest capacity and oldest USB stick I could find for maximum compatibility.  I have NO idea if this will help, but it's something else to try while you wait to speak to tech support.  I did my update with a 1GB USB 1.0 stick and it worked flawlessly.  Also fully format, not "quick" format, the stick before using if you're on Windows, if on a Mac use the secure erase option before repartitioning.  And good luck!

Hi everybody, I 've great news my nDAC has been repaired!!

Most of the topics which resolved the issue had been posted by the members. I post the actions just in case someone would need it:

  1.  Old USB stick used with memory capacity of 512MB.
  2. USB stick formatted in FAT 32.
  3. USB stick loaded at the nDAC back.
  4. First loaded to previous 4.10.6 update version.
  5. Next loaded to the latest 4.11.8 version.

Thanks again to all repliers for their useful help. This is my second post but am still impressed about the expertise available.

I have managed to install and run V.4.10.6. Successfully as Santi did above. The problem now is that the only USB stick that I have the Dac no longer reads ie when inserted the Dac will switch to it but not read it. This means that I cannot install the latest update V.4.11.8. after all. What a waste of time!

How do you find a USB that works anyway? I bought and returned 2 sticks yesterday as they didn't work in the Dac but did in everything else and the one that did,at first, was scrounged.

It was not a waste of time. In fact, you are almost done! The problem happened to me as well when I upgraded to 4.10.6 and I have reported it in https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...rted-usb-drives-list

As Richard Dane pointed out, the Naim DAC can be a bit fussy when it comes to USB sticks. I had problems with Toshiba sticks under 4.10.6, see link above.

In contrast, I never had problems with SanDisk and I have upgraded from 4.10.6 to 4.11.8 with a 4GB SanDisk Cruzer. I suggest you try a SanDisk stick if you have not already done so.

Well yes, of course it wasn't a waste of time …I was having a bit of a 'paddy' about it and I am now feeling better about it all.  I have now successfully updated to 4.11.8 using an old USB multi card reader I found in the kitchen drawer and the SD card liberated from my significant other's camera. Plays music files OK too. Is this supposed to be able to happen?

Congratulations!  The Naim Dac makes us finally appreciate the hidden charme of forgotten kitchen drawers, multi card readers and old 512MB USB cards or sticks! As the germans say: ende gut alles gut! I do not know whether this is supposed to happen but, hey, you have a Naim Dac running 4.11.8. Enjoy! Best, nbpf
