Bookshelf Speakers
Posted by: Gavin L on 05 December 2015
I would be interested in suggestions for smallish, bookshelf speakers. This is not for the main system, but something that needs to work in the lounge and will mostly be connected to a Sony Bravia TV as a source or streaming via Airport Express.
Both sources will be far from ideal, and I need something that look "inoffensive" (small) and works at lower volumes.
I am lucky enough to have saved my old 52/250/Supercap. I also have some very old Linn Kan's (borrowed), but looking for a longer term solution.
Anyone in a similar position? I wonder what you are using and how you are getting on?
Kans on Kan II stands. Best of all, you already have them. Can you keep them? Brilliant.
Or if you want something that's great fun but a lot more forgiving and cheap as chips, look for some Goodmans Maxim 2s.
I'm sure there are plenty of other options but these two are the ones I have used very successfully myself recently in just such a situation - the Kans were the real surprise; even fed from sources like the Sony Bravia and Blu-Ray player their qualities shine through.
Harbeth P3esr's are pretty amazing for their diminutive size, and at the same time every forgiving and more than capable should you feed them extremely exotic signals later down the road - and their timing is pretty damn fine!!

+1 for the Harbeths. Such a lovely warm midrange. I had them (and their predecessor) for about 15 years.
(Also maybe Neat Iotas, although your amps can handle much more...)
And just to throw a complete curveball, how about Mini Maggies??
Dynaudio Excite X14 or the new Emit series or the outgoing DM line.
N-Sats? Well, you did ask on the Naim forum, and with a 250, I find it hard to believe they wouldn't sing nicely....and you can get wall brackets.
To be clear are we really talking about bookshelf or standmounts?
Anything rear ported is going to have issues in a bookshelf.
Maybe slightly off in terms of absolute quality, but the old B&W DM600i and DM610i are great value and have a fullbodied sound and tight tunefull bass due to their closed cabinets.
Choose the one fit for the space available (the DM610i's are rather big).
With N-sats you can't go wrong even better than kans

Thanks, a lot of suggestions here and I clearly have some research to do. The Kan's are now set up, so time to give them a try. The key is whether they have the chance to shine given how they will be used (lower volume, audio and some lower quality streaming). This will not for moments of self indulgence, alone at a healthy volume.
To answer on of the questions raised, they will be mounted on a stone topped cupboard. No opportunity for stands. Small and unobtrusive is also a constraint.
Although I stand by my N-Sat suggestion, I can't think of any speaker that can match Neat Iotas for performance out of a really small box. Thinking even more outside the box though, maybe some of the smaller Eclipse speakers.
I'm a big fan of the KEF LS50. I have them in daily use at the moment whilst I assemble the necessary funds to acquire a new pair of floorstanders. I certainly have no cause for complaint and am still regularly surprised and delighted by them. Eventually I plan to get a Unitiqute (or similar) to go with them to form a second system.
You'll need to experiment with the foam bungs if you're going to use them on top of cabinets though.
Kans on 'Sound Organisation' dedicated wall brackets mounted on a solid wall. They could be utterly jaw dropping on the end of a 52/250 and would likely, given a first class source, better 80% of the over stylised, over detailed, over priced rubbish that is available today.
In a similar Setup (Linn Classik Movie, Samsung LED TV), Gallo Nucleus micro Speakers work well for me. Leema Xeros come to my mind as well.
Hi, I was impressed by Neat Iota's a couple of years back
