Sad news for Rush fans

Probably expected after the last tour but Neil Peart has announced his retirement in a recent press article.  His daughter followed that up with a tweet stating that as of today her dad was a retired drummer.  Always a chance that he will relent but its been a hell of a ride since I heard my first album back in my teens and I'm grateful for the forty years we had them and don't begrudge Neil his retirement in the slightest

was expected - so not sad, it's just a natural step in what was happening...

Seems he may not have retired after all, according to Classic Rock web site and Geddy Lee.

Don't hold out for any more tours. Albums? Maybe. Not a bad catalogue left behind though.

I was rather hoping for one more UK tour, even if Geddy's voice is shot, but it seems very unlikely now.  Haven't liked the last couple of albums even though they have been well received elsewhere.  I'm glad they have gone out on a high and, as you say, there is a huge back catalogue of excellent work to listen to

Played drums since 11, my peak as a player technically was to play YYZ, my fellow band mates were mightily impressed. He is one of those drummers drummers, along with Stewart Copeland, John Bonham, Keith Moon and yes somewhat Ringo Starr, you try playing those Beatles tracks on the drums, bloody random but better than generally perceived.

Peart was very technical, like Tim Alexander for early Primus, but didn't for me quite have that soul/feel, but exceptional. Wouldn't really work for the next ACDC or Metallica album would he. Superb musician, end of.

Apt time to visit his website for those who haven't; neilpeart.com. A busy man. There was an in depth article in Rolling Stone this summer, Peart discussing his reasons for retiring. I got the sense the retirement was from touring for sure, with albums a rare possibility. Can't blame the guy with a young girl at home, projects outside music, and six (real) books to his credit. I've always loved his lyrics, enjoy reading his blog on occasion, and really ought get my hands on one of his books. Anyone read one?

Not surprised at all. And not sad. Nothing to prove and a legacy that will live for generations. Maybe the odd studio project will leak out. The R40 Live concert has got good bye written all over it. Ged's voice couldn't keep up at times (but not all the time) but apart from that it was triumphant. Hell of a way to go.
