Help - U/S SSD won't see my NAS drive

Posted by: heihei on 17 May 2011

OK - I admit to being a bit of a networking simpleton, but I've set up my NAS drive my network via a 1GB switch and everything seems to be visible on my Mac.

I've now set up the SSD via the switch, which also seems to be visible on the Mac.

Problem is, the SSD cannot see the NAS drive!!

Help!! Want to get ripping tonight!!!

Bit of an open question - there's a myriad of things that could be at play here but I suspect that you have no open SMB (or SAMBA / CIFS) shares set up on your NAS for the UnitiServe-SSD to see. What NAS are you using?

It's a Netgear ReadyNAS with 2x2TB drives - brand new and set up as per Netgear's instructions.

OK - The ReadyNAS is a very common unit which we use a number of here. There are no inherent issues with those so I suspect that the issue is with the setup of your shares on the ReadyNAS.

Has the NAS been set to a static IP address? (It should be.)

Shares on the NAS should have open (guest / public) access with no passwords or usernames and CIFS enabled on them. Any share that is being used as a store for the UnitiServe to rip to must not be used, accessed or modified by any other programs, processes or users other than the UnitiServe.

The UPnP server that is built into the ReadyNAS should be disabled or at least it made sure that it is not accessing the folder that the UnitiServe is using to rip to - the UPnP server on the ReadyNAS can lock out access to files and folders when it decided to scan for updated files which isn't helpful.

Has your dealer not been able to help you set up the unit?

Thanks Phil - that gives me something to go on.

I have set the NAS (and Unitiserve) to static IP addresses, but suspect I haven't set up the shares correctly on the NAS or disabled the UPnP server on it.

My dealer has offered a few pointers, but in fairness to them they shipped the Unitiserve to me ahead of the rest of the system so I can rip my CD collection ahead of moving house, at which point they're coming round to install the whole system (202/200/HC/nDAC/S-600's).

If you would like me to take a look at how you have it set up remotely then drop me an email to phil.harris@naimnet.com and we can arrange that...

Cheers

Thanks Phil. I'll see where I get to tonight, and then if no joy I'll drop you an email.

A quick question - do I need to create any folders on the NAS, or is it just a case of sorting the permissioning?

By default the ReadyNAS usually has a "media" and a "backup" share which are set up with open access but the built in UPnP server application accesses the media folder as and when it wishes (and locks files in there as it is scanning).

I would normally set up a share for the Music Server (I usually call it "NaimAudio") which has CIFS enabled (the default) and public access and then let the UnitiServe find that and then promote it to a store...

Phil - no joy in following the above. Will drop you an email.
