Which watch do you wear?

Me -  IWC Mark XII Automatic

An absolute classic in my view.

Dear Christian,

I really like the Minerva. And I reckon that I could read that face on my wrist!

Surely the point with an analogue watch is that the picture of the hands is all that's needed, the brain makes the time out of the analogue view.

A digital watch/display has to be read and it is not as immediate, as the brain needs more computation time(excuse pun) to get a result.

As long as you can see the hands there is no need for numbers with a traditional watch/clock.

With the sense of North! Midnight or Noon ...

That is why English watch and clock faces with Roman marking have such a heavy "4"  with  "IIII" rather than the real Roman "IV" as the the eight [VIIII] is as heavy to balance the twelve ... on the thirds round the face ...

Easy, even for the sight impaired ... [Arabic numbers are next to useless on a watch face to me, and digital is lost on me entirely] ...

I like the Apnea.

With skinny wrists I find the trend for lareg and bulky watches leaves me behind. I had a TAG F1 for 15 years as my first 'proper' watch then bought this excellent understated Sinn 656 automatic. Crisply designed, feels unbreakable and a nice sensible size/weight.

A Motorola F3, tells the time, does phone calls and txts. Does all I want.

Posted on: 29 May 2011 by GraemeH

I can't tell the time on the 'Apnea' !

I have been using an all aluminium Swatch for the past ten years.  I changed the battery only once.  Very good, inexpensive (100$ in 2001), reliable, solid and very LIGHT.  What else could I ask for?  I would prefer an XPS over a Rolex...

Cheers!

An XPS is a tad big on the wrist...

I have a Rolex Turnograph which looks great and tells time when the notion takes it - pathetic to put so much effort into making something which simply fails in its main role in life.  It hasn't stopped Rolex from continuing to increase the price which I find somewhat bemusing!

I also have a Seiko 'Sports 100' which my mum got me for my 18th many years ago.  It hasn't had any work carried out to it other than the odd battery replacement and it still keeps perfect time.  Doesn't look as impressive as the Rolex, but it does it's job much more successfully.

Maybe I'm missing the point....

A Swatch stainless steel chronometer watch from 2001 is what I regularly wear. Looks more expensive and fancy than it really is but just works perfectly. That's all that matters on a daily basis.

Regards...

Yeah, I've had an automatic Kirium for years and years. Nothing fancy, but it has been very reliable. Loses a tiny bit of time, but I've not had it looked at in 12+ years. I wear it 24/7 and always have. I take zero care of it. It gets washed when I do. The crystal "glass" does not even have the slightest scratch, in spite of the the fact that it is curved and sits proud of the bezel. It must be amazingly hard material. No complaints.

Currently a Suunto Vector. Used for measuring altitude whilst out on the hills. It also tells the time and has an alarm.

My dream watch is a Breitling Navitimer. Would have bought one for my 40th Birthday but the collapse in the pound's value sent the price right up.

I have a Tag Heuer F1 in the titanium black finish and thanks to Jon M, thinking a Christopher Ward C8 Pilot mk2 is in my near future...

Posted on: 02 July 2011 by JamieWednesday

I was given a steel F1 for my birthday three years ago

Had a number of watches before, including a Monaco (which is still my 'favourite') but the F1 hasn't left my wrist since and I never bother looking for others now

Totally reliable, goes anywhere, pool, sea, sand, grimy wet. Had usual knocks a watch gets but there's not a mark on it. And I think chunky smart without being too ostentatious (or large, as I don't have monster wrists...)

I bought my wife a Christopher Ward a few years ago. Looks smart but not reliable in the end and the slightly techie buckle broke, which put me off

I have an Oris Artelier Skeleton, lovely to wear and look at, granted not as accurate as my Iphone, but when I want to know the time I look at my wrist. Guess I'm just old skool.

A Swatch; I'm not running the 100m, diving the Pacific, going into space, and I don't want to carry some ostentatious chunk of metal around.

Cheers,

I've got a Jaeger-leCoultre Master Compressor Memovox.

Years ago I saw and heard an original Memovox which has a mechanical Alarm. Imagine the sound of a mechanical alarmclock from a wriswatch. I was sold. But the watch wasn't because pricewise it was as far from my wrist as a nice Naim set!

Time passed by and last year with a huge help from my girlfriend I was able to afford a real Memovox from the Master Compressor series. And a Naim set by the way.....

Another TAG Heuer Kirium.  It was a 30th birthday present to myself and i've just turned 43.  It is the only watch i've had that has lasted more than two years on my wrist.  Still looks as good as the day I brought it home. It is beyond me that they are no longer making this watch as none of their current range are as appealing.

My second watch is a Garmin 405CX, which i've had for a year now.  This is solely used to track and time my running activity, which it does brilliantly.

Rado Ceramica, keeps perfect time but has had to go back to Rado for the second time as the winder won't re connect with the mechanism when I change the date.

I was a landscaper for years, just basic watches.  Then a friend gave me a handsome black Tiffany watch metal bracelet with the description " the tiny scratches  will create a beautiful patina in the future"  Yeah so did my work boots.  It was  a reluctant gift I didn't want.  and 2 years later it was stollen when I was gone from home.  It was so special only Tiffany could work on it with tiny tools.

Recently wanting a decent easy read watch spent days on the internet and talking with a friend who likes them.  I found so many gaudy and stupid looking pieces.  Then buying  something at Sears we passed by jewelry and a nice metal large face with green background and easy to read numbers and a hefty fabric band by Armitron caught my eye.  $50, handsome, it works.

In my research I saw some 2+ grand watches one said the background was a special woven matierial and all numbers and dials were black.  What good is that?  Woman's comment was impossible to read at any light level but I love it....  so why buy it?
