HDX playing only the first track on some albums_

Posted by: Yvan on 11 December 2015

Hi everyone,

I'm lost here...  I cannot understand why, just on few albums, my HDX will only play the first track of the album. Then I have to hit 'Next' to hear the second track and so an so. A trick to this is to play the album with the random option.

But I don't understand why it won't play the full album, going itself from track to track automatically like it does on other albums. Even if I hit 'queue next'  it won't play the songs next to another.

What's missing on these albums ?  Has anyone a cue for me ?

Which version of HDX are you using? Internal hard drive? SSD?

Are are you storing your music on the HDX or a NAS drive?

If the latter, do you have more than just one server software running on it? (Such as a QNAP NAS drive running ASSET and another software) - if so, turn off one of the server software and see if you still get the problem.

Thank you for this link. I must say that the concerned albums are not compilations ablums. There are from one and only artist.

Thanks for your input Blythe.

I'm using the latest version of HDX software (1.7b and my desktop client is also up to date).  My music is stored on a Synology NAS and I don't have any musical app running on the NAS.

Any other idea ?

On your Synology, do you know which music server it's running?
I have a QNAP which came with a preinstalled music server but I have added Asset which I use.
Apparently, if you're running two music servers on your NAS, it can cause the issue you're experiencing.
It may also be something as simple as the Synology needing a re-boot to correct things.

Don’t mention QNAPs preinstalled music server, the thought of it sends me into a cold sweat.

I use the Logitech music server on my QNAP along with a Squeezebox Touch. During a QNAP firmware update, my music files where transferred to the QNAPs music server and the Logitech server deleted.

I was not a happy bunny.

I haven’t performed a firmware update on the SBT or NAS since.

Thanks for the heads up!
My QNAP is telling me there's a firmware update available but I thought "if it ain't broken, why fix it".....
Looks like I might have made the right decision not to update!

Strange decision not to update ........  I keep all my electronics updated & have everything set to auto update or tell me its available - if that facility is available . That way I get the latest enhancements & nothing goes out of date & is rendered no longer qualified for support.
I have never had a mishap such as Fatcat has mentioned,  I would like to think it was because something was non-standard.
Plus I'm a Naim beta tester so updates come down the pipe on a weekly basis.

I have a Unitiserve and this happens to me now and then.  Even though the Naim app shows that, say, 15 tracks have been added to the playlist, only the first track plays.  I usually turn off the 555PS and then on again and it seems to resolve the problem.

Thanks for your tips guys. I will try to reboot my HDX. On the Synology NAS side, I really don't have any music server running. The files are just stored there and that's all. And the NAS has the auto-update option activated and is rebooting every morning.

after rebooting my HDX, the problem is still occuring.

Is there some special information that these devices needs in order to know that a song is to be red after the other ?

Actually I didnt reboot the Unitiserve but the NDS.  I too have a Synology server with all my music files.  Is your HDX acting as a server to another streamer?

No, my HDX is just playing alone.

As it's only happening on a few albums, I suspect the tagging is somehow corrupted or incorrect. The HDX is seeing the tracks not as a whole album. Can you either; re-rip the CD's or re-tag them?
What format are your files stored in? WAV? FLAC?
Were they all ripped by the HDX or are some downloads stored in the downloads folder?

Found the trick !

I realized that, at least on one of the problematic albums, loading the files in MP3tag software was way longer than for other albums. So I tried to supress the images I did put for that album through MP3tag and..  surprise !   It is working all right now in the HDX. These where 8 to 10 images and with heavy files. I had the habit to put more than just the cover image, just in case it could be usefull in the future with another application...   that wasn't such a good idea for it seems the HDX cannot handle it all right and looses it's mind while loading the informations of the next song.

So, don't put more than one image into the tags, or be careful that the images won't be to heavy !

Thanks for all your tips !

Don't put ANYTHING in the NAS folder for your ripped album; it must be only handled by the server. Any other file will mix up the database. It is for a reason that in the 2TB version this folder is not write accessible.

Hi Manu,

The images were not in the NAS folder for ripped album. I have one folder that is reserved for the HDX and were it could RIP CDs. And I have two or three other folders where I put the downloaded music. Having the images into these last folder doesn't seem to annoy the HDX at all. But having too much images put into the tags references (through the MP3Tag software) can create problems as I describe in the begining of this post.

But thanks for your input !

I've found after considerable heartache that the best approach is to rip discs on a PC running Jriver, always ripping into FLAC, making sure the tracks always go into one folder, name that folder something sensible, then copy that folder onto a Mac Mini using serviio.  Then look at the Mac mini using folder view.  Sometimes you have to rename the resultant files to make them sensible and to make sure that they play in the right order.

The bottom line is that, at least for classical music, metadata and the music databases are pretty much worthless, so don't even try to use them. Folder and file names are controllable and you can make them consistent whereas metadata seems to be entirely random.
