Harald Fairhair, First King of Norway.

Posted by: George F on 11 December 2015

Harald Fairfair is my thirty-first great grandfather in a direct line! Amazing rubbish you can find out on the internet!

And more recently, the Queen of Norway is my seventh cousin!

Should look good if I ever emigrate there!

Anyone else have know Royal Viking blood?

Rollo the Dane,  1st Duke of Normandy, 34 ish x Grt Grand Father. You can work out the rest.  Several Swedish Kings and Chalemagne the Great (38 x great grandfather). Helped that my great grandfather was a genealogist and the local registrar for Births Deaths and Marriages. About 100 years ago he wrote out a family tree going back to 1590.  Once you can track that far, the internet can do the rest.  I saw his work some fourty years ago and more and then it disappeared until we cleared out my late mother's house. He did know that one of my great uncles married a descendant of Edward I.  That line makes very colourful reading.  There's one entry marked 'Beheaded 1542'. Close friend of Thomas Cromwell and paid the price. My brother, whose not easily convinced, swears that Marcus Aurelius is a great grandfather.  I've yet to see this but I guess Charlemagne would he been well connected himself. Boy, did we burn some candles working out all this.

I'm some % from Poland and some % from Carinthia (funny is it?) but i do believe my ancestors were sharing shanty  with sheeps and chinckens during winter.

Fornjot "The Ancient Giant", King of Kvenland [Finalnd] is George Fredrik's 42nd great grandfather!

So my family tree goes back to 191 AD as well!

We could be very distant cousins.  Well aren't we all?

Herregud, what a coincidence! My mother's family tree goes back to Harald Fairhair! ("Herregud," I understand, means "OMG," and it's first known use in writing, according to some people on the internet, was in the acronymic form "HG" by the Norse poet Njal in his sagas about impressive new audio gear.)

I guess you pays your money, you gets your flattery, eh? My mother should have spent a few more bucks so we  trace back to Harald Bluetooth or Svein Forkbeard. Who wants to trace back to a hairdresser?

My father's family tree, I'm proud to say, traces very vaguely back to Sicily, but we don't talk about dat

Dear Clemenza,

My ancestry to Harald is also through my mother, who was Norwegian. We must be something like thirty-first cousins!

Everyone of European ancestry is descended from Charlemagne. And Muhammad. And - very possibly - Harald Fairhair. And everyone in the world is descended from Nefertiti and Confucius. Fascinating subject:

The possible link back to Confucious/Genghis Khan could be true for me as my Chinese family all call me OneHung Lo.

Fascinating turn of discussion. There is something new to learn every day. The thought that indigenous European are at least something like twentieth cousins had never struck me. Thanks for all the replies.

If anything this only enhances my interested in documented ancestry and family links!

I have seen them all but am forbidden to give details to mere mortals. No matter what your lineage, we shall perhaps meet one day in Valhalla.

My earthly avatar is a direct descendant of Coel Hen.

Sorting out my Dad's effects shortly after he died I found the paperwork that showed a direct link back to Hereward the Wake.  Which was nice.
