From Superuniti to nac172xs/200

Posted by: longmanjon on 11 December 2015

i thought I would change from the Superuniti to the 172xs/200 to eventually go to the 272/250, what can I expect initially from the 172/200 also I only have one powerline so should I get another powerline first or a highline?

thanks

Thanks guys for your responses. I look forward to hearing a 272 when I can afford to exchange my Superuniti.

How long does the 250DR take to burn in properly? Does it go through highs and lows or does it just keep getting better?

Does having it switched on but not playing any music through it have any effect on burn in?

Thanks Russ.

Could someone please explain the differences replacing a Superuniti with a 272 both on a 250DR?

Just exchanged my 250.2 with a brand new 250DR and so far it is far superior and I only got it yesterday!

I won't be changing the Superuniti for a while and plan to demo nearer the time but it would be good to hear what the 272 brings.

Many thanks

Russ.

Hi russ,

had original your setup. SU with amp-section off, 250 as amp with and without DR.

I think the preamp and streaming sections in the 272 are (far) better.

Now, 272/xp5xs/250dr.

Try it! And with a external PS, almost  perfect.

Please tell me more on xp5xs with 272. What does it do? Did you compare to xps?

Hi Russt

In my experience the 250DR sounded great straight out of the box and has had no "off" sounding periods. It has never sounded other than excellent.

If the discussion would end , NAIM , implement , my 4g usb stick with direct access from streamer with software login, maybe work as small router application , possibly to a high resolution streaming service. No nas, no ethernet cables , usb cables, etc..
Just 272 with xps for streaming and preamp as one box solution.

After that, trash your nas, routers and 1xx also, except record. Go bigger in pre- /amping if necessary.

Best , internal power supply (if extern psu also connected) only for pre-amp or digital section, and external for the other one.

Sorry for that.

Anyone compared the 172/200 to a Uniti 2?

Posted on: 18 December 2015 by catalinmetal

not directly, but SU is better than Uniti2, and 172/200(DR) is better than SU... so go figure... the only downside (for me isn't a downside anymore) is that you don't get the CD transport with 172/200... but since the rate of failures  of newer cd transport used by Naim in cd5si, unitilite and uniti2 is very high, i would consider this as a bonus (skipping the cd transport)

I've only used the cdp on my U2 once just to try it out so no worries with that.  Does the 172 sound like the XS 2? I've had one of those prior to my U2. Just curious about the sound of the 172.

Hi all,

apologies for not responding sooner, but man flu took over and we all know how serious that is

Anyway I took a listen to the options, and I actually preferred the option of the 172xs over the SU and decided to buy a 250.2 (non dr) as this provided a similar power level to the SU?

although I wasn't able to listen with my speakers, I shall be spending this weekend giving all a proper burn in.

but so far I felt the 172 had a more open cleaner sound to the SU which I do prefer, I'm sure many will disagree but in the end it's my ears and wallet.

will keep you up to date after a few bottles of Pinot noir and many albums
