Statement Remote : Quiz Time
Posted by: Graham Clarke on 12 December 2015
Statement remote control, as in the image below. Anyone want to take a guess on how much a replacement one costs...?
£2k?
I'd expect them to be free to Statement purchasers who have lost or damaged one - and with a complimentary system check up and probably with an Indian Head message to help relieve the stress.
Answer: More than my lovely system cost ...
Not trying to be facetious Graham (some hope!) but if I owned a Statement component I wouldn't expect to have to pay for a replacement remote. If the reason for its demise wasn't covered by my insurance I would expect good will gesture in the shape of a replacement. Unless I'd really managed to piss my dealer off!
For the sake of a theoretical discussion I'd also go with something in the region of £2 maybe up to £2,5K
Has one lost one’s remote?
£800?
G
£1,200. Not sure how on earth that price can be justified!
the gyroscope in mine which is supposed to make it illuminate seems a bit erratic, so Naim are replacing under warranty. They've sent an advanced RMA to my dealer which is how I know the price.
Yikes!
The influence of Focal, perhaps?
A bit of brushed ally on the front is worth a thousand pounds?
ATB from George
1200 pounds appears ridiculous. I'd be surprised if cost is much above 50 pounds (that's 48 pounds for the that funky sounding gyroscope what ever it does) .. unless perhaps the VLSI surface mount chips inside are mostly hand made Rolex watch style....
The styling of it reminds me of Mark Levinson.
I am going for £3500.
I am not technically minded but concur with Simon, would be amazed if it cost more than £300 to manufacture.
I guess that price makes it one of Naim's cheaper components. Is it IR only?
Why a Statement still need an IR remote? Naim should pay you for accepting to use a primitive device... Someone remember Sckotty to talk to a mouse for use a PC in the Star Trek movie?
1200 seems quite reasonable as it offers the option of an upgrade path. You can start with the remote for 1200, then you get the manuals for 1500, the packaging for 3000, etc.....so it smooths everything.......
it's it's better then upgrading from let's say 300 to 500 as in that case you can only dream about what it will do to you, and in this case you can already starting to show of your remote to friends.....
Yipes!
thought £800 for my Vitus remote, had I bought it separately, was a lot but at least it is programmable, with a bit of display on it, so can control my vitus kit, and my HDX. Also it's a solid, expensive feeling but of kit and is rechargeable, which takes around an hour every 3 months or so. Sounds like a bargain now!
How can that possibly cost a lot more than any other Naim controller? Is it just because it's made in such small numbers? It doesn't look anything special, maybe it's possible to use any Naim controller
The cost is likely high due to being produced in very small numbers (maybe 50-100 required each year), plus the original R&D costs plus manufacturing. It is made to a very high standard, it's 100% metal with a silky smooth finish to it. It is very tactile and nice to hold in your hand.
Still makes me wince at the price though...
Graham - is the top right button for off or standby? Does the S1 need the remote that comes with it or can use the basic one for at least most of the functions?
Chris,
The power button puts it into standby. Apparently there is a small SMPS which uses very little power (under 1w I think), presumably just enough to keep the electronics ticking over to awaken it when the remote or power button on unit is pressed.
Haven't tried standard remote to be honest but I would be surprised if it didn't work. Of course you wouldn't be able to change the display brightness which is a task you do all of ... once!
Is it IR only?
Mine is also a bit temperamental as to when the light comes on and seems different from what I remember when I first got it - but it works fine on the volume control. As long as it continues to work I'm happy.
I usually use my old Naim Flash remote to control everything, as it is rather nice to use and has the numbers on it to select tracks, which fashion seems to have discarded on the new remotes, but I still find these essential. A shame it got banned because of use of Depleted Uranium and Heavy Metals in construction. It also runs about five time longer on a set of batteries than the RCOM.
