Suggestions on system setup?

Posted by: Zipperheadbanjo on 12 December 2015

After a period of investigating options and doing demos I am going to be trading up to a bunch of new gear within the next two weeks. I'm starting to consider how to best arrange everything in my rack. I have 8 levels of Quad 4 Evo at my disposal. Here is what I am thinking... please chime in if you think this could be improved upon or if my logic isn't making sense. Note that the amp has to be on the left most Quad 4 rack due to speaker cable length and room limitations.

Left Rack                                      Centre Rack                             Right Rack

NAC 252                                      RP 10 (on wall bracket)

                                                   _____________

                                                     NDX                                              Superline

                                                 ________________                           ________________

Hugo TT                                       RP 10 PS / Hicap DR

                                                ___________________                       __________________

Nap 300                                 Supercap DR                                Nap 300 PS

Note that I could break up the Quad 4 and stack it in different configurations... i.e. 1 x 2 level stacks and 2 x 3 level stacks.... etc.

One thing I would definitely consider with that configuration is removing the RP 10 PS and Hicap from beneath the Superline. It would benefit from an empty shelf if it needs to be on the brawn rack. I assume the Hugo and TT PS are plugged into a separate circuit from the rest of the HiFi?

I think I'd have it arranged as thus, but this would require one extra shelf..

                                               RP 10 on wall shelf

NAC252                                Superline

NDX                                       Space

NAP300                                 RP10 PS  Hicap

Hugo                                     NAP300 PS

This isn't far off what I have in my system...

LP12 on Audiotech wallshelf

552                                      Superline

NAP 500                              Space

Radical                                NAP500 PS

Hugo                                   Supercap

Good luck

Steve

Looks superb, Steve.  Haven't seen many all-black Fraims.

PS - think you've omitted mention of the 552PS in listing your brawn stack.

One comment on the speaker positioning - the appear to be a bit too close to each other vs your listening position (or perhaps it's just an angle of the pic)

It's the angle thanks.

Yes Mike cheers.

The 552 PS sits between the 500 PS and Supercap.

So not the short SL run

2.7m between the speakers and the same from each speaker to the listening position, as you know Chris.

Thanks for the tip Steve.

Regarding your comment about having the Hugo TT and RP10 PSU on a different circuit... Is this due to the switch mode psu in these devices?

It would be possible to plug these two devices into a separate outlet... I'm not sure if that is the same as a different circuit, but I assume not. Would plugging into a different outlet be beneficial or no?

Note that I do have an Audience RP2 power conditioner which I use on the outlet into which the the hifi gear is plugged into to. Not sure how if this would affect your suggestion or not.

Hi Zipperhead,

I was assuming you has a dedicated mains supply to your hifi, which is worth considering as it does make a difference. There is a current thread on this topic.

Otherwise, as you have a mains conditioner I would put the SMPS and the HugoTT into a separate socket and just have the rest of the hifi on the mains conditioner block.

It's easy to demonstrate the effect of the SMPS on the SQ. Just play a record and unplug the SMPS. There is a noticeable difference.
