Advice on speakers short list

Posted by: Kevo on 13 December 2015

My current setup consists of:

LP12/Valhalla/Trampolin/Akito/AT-OC5
Naim CSX/XPS
Vortexbox + LMS Server + Logitech Touch + Arcam rDAC/Linear PSU (+ Qobuz HiFi subscription)
NAC82 (Pots8) + 2×HiCap (all serviced)
Nap180 (serviced)
Monitor Audio Silver + TQ Black cables
Room is 14' x 23'
I listen to all types of music, including rock, classical, choral, etc.

The 180 is soon to be replaced by a 250 and I feel the Monitor Audio speakers remain the weak link in this setup: While they have good detail and bass and are good on simpler material, I feel they are a tad bright and not that good on presenting larger scale content (big orchestral or multi-tracked rock). I am considering floor standing speakers only and preferably not significantly larger than the MA 6's.

I prefer to buy quality 2nd hand equipment rather than new, so would consider speakers that are not necessarily current. If anyone has suggestions on what to consider, given my observations on the current speakers.

Thanks in advance.

.....come on .SBLs just look ridiculous.   Yes SL2s do have a look to them that once you get your eye in - has something, and others like the Ovators - The DBLs and SBLs though looks like something from a Terry Gilliam movie. Like a steam driven trouser press for over weight vicars that was made in a shed from Formica and Velcro

I love your analogy of the DBLs and SBLs.

LOL!  Now that is style.

@tobyjug, I have to agree. The SBL's are ugly speakers, whatever their sound.

To me, without grills to cover the drivers, most SBLs look like something BBCs Terry Nation designed for Dr Who  (alongside the Daleks). Especially when compared to more recent designs that look really nice.

Does anyone have experience of Sonus Faber (Toy Tower, Concerto Domus) or Kudos X2?

Thanks,

Kevin
