Frustrated! Backing up US to QNAP
Posted by: wavecounter on 13 December 2015
Sorry to all as I know this is a topic that is forever rehashed. However I am getting nowhere trying to setup a simple backup using the DTC to my QNAP. I create a folder - that is empty on my NAS (no special characters in the name) - and go to my DTC to apply it as a backup. Keep getting the message that folder is not empty. Also having problems with NAS not being online. Think I have tried everything! Help?
I experienced similar frustrations when I had a US and first tried to set up a backup folder. Eventually I discovered that the problem was due to the backup folder automatically being created with a Recycle bin folder contained within it even though the folder appeared to be empty.
Try creating the backup network share without a Recycle bin as follows. Log in to the QNAP web GUI and select Control Panel => Privilege Settings => Shared Folders and select the Shared Folder tab. Then click on Create => Shared Folder and under Advanced Settings clear the tick against 'Enable Network Recycle Bin.'
It should then be possible to select the folder created above as the backup destination for the US.
I hope this helps.
PS I have since sold the US and now just use the NAS running Asset UPnP.
Thx DSC for the tips! Just created the folder on my QNAP....seems like I cannot select it in DTC to assign it as a backup. I can see it just can't do anything with it?
I had a bit of a job setting up my US=> QNAP back up too Wavecounter.
Phil @ Naim Support very kindly dialled in to my PC and set it up for me. (top service, by the way!)
Maybe drop them an e mail and ask for help?
Hi Wavecounter,
Sorry to hear that you are still having trouble. There is an article on the Naim website here. Have you followed all the instructions contained in it? (I think they're rather out of date and don't accurately reflect the current QNAP models or QTS software but you should still get the gist.) If that doesn't help, it might be best to do as CHRISH suggests and contact Phil at Naim for help.
Good luck!
David
I think it is important that you set the workgroup from the qnap to "naim". You can do it under the settings for networkserves smb.
Thx Reinibert, CHRISH, and DSC for your tips/advice. Still no success for me (likely to my lack of IT capability) - will drop Phil a line at Naim in the near future. I have 850 CDs on the US and it is still not backed up ! Not losing sleep....yet
What are you naming your backup folder?? Don't use any spaces or characters other than letters and numbers!
There used to be a NAIM manual for setting up NAS folders - I cannot find it on the website anymore. If you email me (email is in my profile) I will send it over.

I have had a raft of problems with backing up my US to my Netgear NAS - we live in a semi-rural location and power-outs are all too frequent.
Phil Harris is yer man - technically brilliant, endlessly patient (with this particular numbskull anyway!).
