System Pics 2016
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015
It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.
Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

Yep, done that one Alba. It's a very nice 'minimalist' combo.
There has never been an occasion where the Nait couldn't demonstrate a source improvement.
Thanks for the support and suggestions guys. I ran the Nait XS with the CD555 and Titans when my 552 was getting its kit off at Salisbury a couple of years ago and the combo worked fine, but sounded somewhat grey and uninvolving. It demonstrated the importance of system synergy and balance.
The Nait in the context of the CD5si and SBL's sounds fab, so I have very respectable other Naim system to use in the meantime.
John.
Hmm the Nait XS is not a Nait 2 ![]()
Alba1320 posted:Come to think of it, he could hook up the CD555 with the Nait? That might be interesting to try?
After all, so long as the amp is a good one, and can drive the speakers satisfactorily, with a source like CD555...
Excatly what i' m doing at the moment since the 282 departure.
Some days it seems brilliant and engaging, others grey and uninvolving.
Regards
Roberto
All the Naits 'work' superbly by not trying too hard. A 552/500 is a tough act to follow twixt a high resolution source and loudspeakers.
If I was happy with the Nait in such august company, I'd feel like a bit of a berk for shelling out for its big brother.
John.
Nait2 CB did a fine job into Titans with CDS3/555PS as source. I hooked it up just to test the Nait2 after service and was pleasantly surprised with the jump n' jive that it delivered. With a digital source, very respectable levels of volume with a ton of attitude
!

I know where you're coming from chaps. The law of dimishing returns can sure bite hard. I was amazed at what a Nait 2 can do into demanding SBL's when I owned both.
The only real limitation was sheer volume. Keep it 'sensible' and the sound can be grin-inducing for sure.

500 and PS off to Salisbury for DR fettling and a service so .......... needs must, when the devil vomits in your kettle.
I think I'm gonna like it when I can revert back to the other system.
John.
recognise the room and the Titans behind, but not little system on the coffee table ![]()
have you been quoted a turnarond for your 500 John?
enjoy

No Ken, it's a system upgrade.
The 552DR/500 was so very yesterday, whereas a Denon microsystem is where it's at these days.
Thanks for the support Ian. I'm desperately trying to convince myself that that is the case. I moved the little Denon kitchen system into the living room as an experiment as much as anything (to save uprooting the Nait from its happy habitat). The £350 system doesn't sound anywhere near as bad as I expected - which is a bit worrying. There's no bass, mid-band or top-end, but something resembling music seems to barge its way through.
I've parted with my 500 a week early Ken - to take advantage of a free ride with another 500 for DR-fettling, going south. Naim technicians will hopefully start the necessary work on 1st February, so I hope not to be without it for too long thereafter.
John.

Hi John
Looks like you will have to pop around for a good dose of olive while the 500 is away then!
Take care, FT
Okay; reality check time. A £350 Denon micro-system was never going to cut it for an audiophile. It's the systems pics thread so you ought to get a picture.

Nait XS2 middle of centre stack with 555PS alive below it and the CD555 on the right stack. Inactive 552 (for decoration only!) above the Nait.
The Nait sounds obviously better than the last time I tried it in this system, and Super Lumina is the difference. If we ever needed further proof that we are all related to Sir Barking of Essex; that's £4,200 of loudspeaker cables on a £1,700 amplifier. Nice.
Not a bad substitute until the big boys come back home.
John.

Many thanks Ian. I'm looking forward to it.

looks familiar John, minus the 'big boys' of course.
all good things are worth the wait -- as you know -- and as will be dramatically demonstrated when your 500 comes back DR-fettled.
i am try to pretend i am not envious -- you are well ahead of me with the DR upgrade and those special speaker wires --
enjoy the wait...

Lovely Sondek you have there John!
Please keep us up to date with the 500's new pair of shoes when they arrive- I'm still in a quandary whether to bite the bullet .
ATB,
Mark
Here is my system. Mr Halibut may recognise the Hutter Rack

There will of course be a '500 Back from DR Fettling' post from me and a few others, I would imagine.
Fun city or the village of the damned?
John.
John,
Looking forward to it!
Richard

Yeah this looks like the new form of downsizing. Similar people can donate the freed up black boxes to me. I could do with a 555PS .....
I thought for one awful minute you had removed the magic Naim fairy dust from your Fraim there John; closer inspection however, reveals it all to be present and correct! ![]()
Enjoy the wait.
Cheers,
Ian

I fear that I may incur the wrath of the Naim Fairy Dust Deity Ian, because a full strip-down and rebuild (with cleansing) is planned for the return of the 500 and PS.
That's bound to bugger up the sound.
John.
