System Pics 2016
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015
It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.
Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

Yes it's a Xerxes. I bought the original in the late 80s when the choice was essentially LP12, Xerxes or Pink Triangle and I am one of those people who just didn't get on with the 'warmth' of the LP12. Roksan did a very good offer a few years ago to upgrade an original Xerxes to Xerxes 20 by transferring the platter and I took advantage of that to future proof the use of the considerable number of LPs I have although in all honesty because of advanced idleness it's rare now that they get played. The Naim app and streaming is so convenient.
The NBLs are Cherry and I would seriously consider DBLs if you could 1. Get them and 2. avoid the divorce! I do wonder if Sopra will come up with something together with Naim in the future.
Don't worry Camlan, just focus on 1, and deal with 2 when you get to it! ![]()

Won't win any photographer awards, but previous mk1 black SBLs replaced with mk2 walnuts, with new tweeters and crossovers. They're in lovely condition, I almost think of them as ex-demo with the new bits fitted.
Definitely an improvement in clarity & insight, recording space acoustics easier to hear etc. The bass is drawing a bit of attention to itself at the moment, but will let them run in for a while before messing about with positioning. Very pleased so far.
How is that left SBL faring with it being stuffed into a cul-de-sac like that?

Very well, I think. Not optimally, I'm sure, and naturally there's little in the way of sound appearing to come from further to the left than where the speaker is. But it sounds good to me.
I suppose I could swap the speaker and rack around, but then the speakers would only be about 4 feet apart, and that seems suboptimal too.
As long as you are happy is all that really matters - being unable to see more of the room, can the entire setup be shifted to the right to give space?
I would think it would really open things up sonically. I agree with you that 4 feet apart would be too close for most situations.
I used to have a pair in cherry veneer and I think SBLs are wonderful speakers!

Great active system Camlan!

Indeed - although I do see the Kudos Super 20 as the torch carrying spiritual successor to the SL2, albeit seriously different and better ![]()

Hmmm... perhaps just leave it at "seriously different".
Interestingly, the previous owner of my SL2s changed to the Super 20. Clearly they thought they were better. Their loss is my gain.
I would say win, win HH ![]()

I can vouch for DBL affect on the opposite sex. Before buying mine, I suggested the new speakers would be the size of a fridge. Needless to say, I wasn't believed and I wasn't spoken to for 24 hours after they arrived! Not all bad tough, I had to move and find a suitable room to house them in
.
I think that almost calls for a separate thread along the lines 'Audio Equiment Design vs Partner's Ability to Accept It - discuss' ![]()
Camlan posted:Thanks John, the end of a 30 year plus journey. The only thing that worries me now is if something happened to the NBLs because there is not a lot of other active speaker choice these days, apart from Ovatars of course. I have been seriously contemplating buying another pair for spares as there have been a couple of pairs on the auction sites of late which have gone for very reasonable money. We'll see.
I know what you mean!
Sure, one can become accustomed to their Speakers, but choice is a good thing! You are not alone, I Bet there are a lot of Active fans, waiting to see if the Focal/Naim Merger will accomodate us with an Active Speaker for the Home.
BTW, Nice System!
Yes it is a difficult call at present given the lack of active ready speaker alternatives.
I have just taken the plunge and updated to 250DRs although I did consider going passive with a 500DR at that stage because of the speaker situation and the triple cost of Super Lumina in the active set up (I am still resisting that particular upgrade!). Luckily I still have the NBL crossovers as they are unsourceable these days. In the end I decided against it on the basis that if anything went wrong I could always change at that stage if needs be.
Given that Kudos Titans can be specified for Linn active, my dealer did think that there may be a chance of persuading them to build a Naim active version and have the Snaxo configured to match by Naim but I will investigate that in the future case of need.

I'm on the same path that you are, But a year behind, Passive Tri Amped PMS Briks.
Curious, what did your DR upgrade, bring to The Party, as it relates to speed, spacing, and noise?
Leaness/imaging/quietness
Excuse my spelling!

Unfortunately there's a door immediately to the right, so nowhere to go.
But should an opportunity to rearrange things crop up, I'll treat it as a tip to try out, so ta for the advice.
Can't see these going anywhere for a very long time!
How do you put pics on here if taken with ipad?
I e-mail the pic to myself & upload it to my PhotoBucket.
Copy the Photo Bucket link address & paste it (insert) into the forum image popup

Just instal the Photobucket app on your iPad. I use this to post screen grabs of what I'm playing. I use the Pad for all my system pictures and can't be bothered to get the camera out, fire up the laptop and so on.
Many thanks chaps I will try the photobucket route
Well time to come clean and say that although I am a reasonably intelligent bloke I am a dunce at computer/ipad/ mobile phones or anything tech.
I only use the ipad for operating the HDX player and computer for email and internet searching. I tried to get the photobucket app you advised on the ipad and got all sorts of apps with photo in it but nothing about photobucket! I also seem, to have now got to give a password each time I open the Ipad?? I would have liked to have shown my set up and where it is housed but I fear I am too dumb to get this out to the forum! I would ask my daughter to do it but she lives in Switzerland!
