System Pics 2016

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015

It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.

Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

Ten years ago it looked like this:

The system was: Lexicon RT10 universal player, Naim NAT05, Bow WazooXL integrated, Marten Design Miles II loudspeakers.

Now it looks like this:

and the system is CDS3, XPSDR, 202, NAPSC, HCDR, 200, SBLs with all Vertere cables.

sorry for the HC sitting on the floor (it's resting on four pure quartz, Audio-Replas feet, though, a concession to those funny years of tweaking), and yes, I take care not to have direct sunlight on the CDS3 when playing music.

Plus, there's a second system in our studio/guest room, with a nostalgia CosyCorner© for vinyl:

with an all-Pioneer, vintage system: PL112D belt turntable, AT cart, SA7300 integrated, SE100 Electret headphones (bought used in 1975 and still working) plus my trusty AR4x, finally used as bookshelf speakers, as was recommended when I was a young man.

(On the wall, left of the sofa, a 1997 Epiphone Howard Roberts and an Aria Fretless portable bass. Plus I have a Martin D28 that my wife gave me for my 60 birthday)

Where I used to keep my ARs and TT, I now have a large TV set used only with the DVD player and to watch some TV series from the Internet. It is connected to the modem but not to any antenna. (View from the sofa, no socks were harmed when taking this picture.)

It's all I believe.

Thanks

M

Lovely rooms Max - looks a great place to spend some quality time listening to music.

Nice relaxing décor Massimo. I particularly like the radiator cover - looks far better now than 10 years ago.

Intrigued by what looks in the first pic like a large flat screen television between the speakers and the same shape and size of something in the newer pic but what looks like a bookcase in a frame.

is it a revolving cabinet that turns around to reveal - James Bond style - something interesting ?

Hi,

unfortunately no, it was just a painted screen for my video projector (a special paint). We had no television set. When we decided to put wallpaper on the wall we kept the screen. When we decided to remove the screen and bring the video media to the studio/guest room I used what wallpaper was left to fill in the screen, but it wasn't enough to cover the dark frame too and it was no more available, so I left the frame and simply put two 'Scandinavian style' bookshelves in the space where the screen had been. The shelves have a positive diffracting effect on sound, and they look nice (to my eyes). It is perhaps a little 'over furnished' for a wall, but it is so..

Thanks! Ten years ago the sitting area was closer to the wall, and the pic mortifies the perspective a little – it looks bare and congested. Anyway, we have three radiator covers in that room and they're in three different finishes, to match the nearby furniture. We chose cherry for those because they were close to the Martens, so when I bought the SBLs I was lucky they were in cherry too...

James, Nigel

thanks, it is indeed a pleasant space. And the guest room's sofa is a very comfortable bed too, so members visiting Northern Italy are always welcome here.

Stefano,

I have similar shoes, in scarlet with orange laces. I also have red laces, but this combination red/orange appeals to the late beatnik in me..

Hmmm...  Good that Naim only comes in one colour then

Posted on: 18 March 2016 by Massimo Bertola

Not really, Naim is iconically Green on Black... (or Black & Chrome).

My Dad, now sadly departed, worked in the shoe industry and always told me that you can tell a decent man by the quality of his shoes.

Indeed Dave, I have  a wardrobe full of quality boots. Maybe we should have a "show us your shoes thread"

Definitely one for the Padded Cell

Looks great, Max.  Interested to learn that you've got a Pioneer PL112D in your second system. I had one of those very many years ago so am pleased to discover that there's at least one still in use.
