System Pics 2016
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015
It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.
Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

Quad 33 - very nice indeed!
One observation if I may - try removing those protective plastic bits from the Ovators spikes. They are really only ment for transportation purposes. If you don't have proper chips, just use some coins to start with - trust me they will not slide ![]()

Thank you Adam will do. I have a set of 'chips,' waiting to go on I only got the speakers this week so left the black protectors on for ease of movement until I have settled on optimum positioning.
Regards Graham.

Of course! Smart move.
It took my Ovators S-400 more than two months to settle. The funny thing is - I got the position spot on in the first place. Once they've warmed up, I moved them around just to check. And ended up in more or less the same spot where I started from ![]()
In my room, they like being spaced quite wide, forming an equilateral triangle with my listenign chair, toed in by approximately 1 cm on the inside spike i.e. the front inside spike is 1 cm back, away from the perpendicular line running between the speakers.

Wow ! Do you mean the famous Cassina of Meda ? as you will know , it's one of the most famous Italian makers o fluxury furniture, along with companies like Flexform
and B &B Italia. The latter was formerly called C & B, Cassina & Busnelli I hope in the future to get a new sofa (B & B or Flexform) for my system room.
Happy Easter
Roberto
Yes - that Cassina
my wife and I love their chairs and sofas - we have quite a few from the Le Corbussier collection.
Well done, excellent choice Sir !

(Definitely not a red RP6...)
Hey, I represent that remark
Joe - I wasn't disparaging a red RP6 (heck, would that i could have one) - just stating the obvious from appearance that it was different (after having looked at his profile, which was not updated when I looked to the newer gear he has in the picture.).
Or have I misunderstood you as well?

The love of fine furniture and fine audio equipment seems to go together
I love some of the Flexform designs.
Also Knoll is not too bad.

Can't think of a better endorser of the product.
A bass player in a band who also has an eye for fine design.

Wow, that's a fire place. Very interesting mix of retro kitch and period play. Ovators look comfortable there.

Looks good Adam, but I wonder at the decision to get all that custom millwork done just to have the speakers blocking those drawers.

Well spotted
currently the drawers are housing my CD collection, which has been ripped onto a server. Not ideal though....
I've just realised that the Ovator S-400s look rather appealing.
Late, as usual!

Did you hear this one?
Son says to his father: 'Dad - when I grow up, I want to be a bass player'.
His dad, with concern in his voice says: 'Son - you can't be both...' ![]()

The Harbeth 40.2 is my new pair of speakers. Saxophones, strings, voices sound very natural with amazing details, it replaces my old trusty Dynaudio Contour S 5.4 as shown below. These photos were taken on a dull El Nino rainy day in California, best day to stay inside with a glass of beer.
"Is this the second or third UQ you have tried/owned
you keep returning !"
It's my second UQ. I got my first (s/h) Qute in september 2015.
I really liked the first one, and looking back perhaps shouldn't have sold it, but when my Naim dealer offered a mint s/h Nait XS for a fair price, shortly after my UQ purchase, I decided to upgrade to the Nait XS and wait patiently till a s/h ND5xs would come on my path.
(as I bought the first UQ for a nice price I hardly lossed money by selling it again)
Unfortunately, I had some pretty bad luck with the Nait XS, as it suffered from transformer hum on a daily basis.
As this seemes to be normal for soms Naim amps my only option was to sell the XS again, and forget about the ND5xs.
Luckily a guy living close to me recently offered this (more recent) UQ, so... that's why I got back to the Qute. ![]()
"I know you are a big Nait 2 fan how does the UQ stack up against such an iconic amp, I was tempted to track one down especially the CB version but they go for silly money."
I sold my Nait 2 a few years ago, so it's a bit difficult to compare the 2 shoebox champs. Also because I had different speakers at that time.
Nevertheless, I can honestly say that, although in a different way, I get at least the same level of musical enjoyment from my current system. ![]()
Ha! Finally figured out how to use my Amazon Cloud drive to share a pic. However, the quality is pretty awful. At least you can see my "Hanging Ethernet cable" and the "Mess that is my other cables."

Nice Harbeth combination with Naim Audio. This is the 1st for me to notice the majestic 40.2 and the Naim Audio gears. I have the NDX / SN2 and Harbeth C7. My future goal is to have the SHL5 Plus and move my C7 to my bed room. The 40.2 is way to big for my small basement audio room. I would like to know which Naim amp / gears are you using to drive the 40.2 and how does it sound? Have you compare you Naim Audio driving Harbeth compare to Tube amp? I would like to get some person feed back on this Naim vs Tube on Harbeth. Thanks. Enjoy the most wonderful human voice speaker in the world....that's my take on this remarkable speaker brand.
"Enjoy the most wonderful human voice speaker in the world" - Very true, I could not have said it better.
The Harbeth 4.2 are the most musical sounding speakers I've ever heard, they somehow pull off the trick of being incredibly revealing of whatever's on the recording while at the same time being absolutely relaxing, neutral, natural and unfatiguing to listen to. To my ear, they simply put the music into the room in a beautiful way, without calling attention to themselves.
The system is Linn LP12, Lingo, Stageline K, Linn Ekos, Lyra Skala -> NAC 252, Supercap -> Nap 500.
Have never been a fan of tube amplification myself.

What a beautiful combination. I would love to sit inside this room listening to music whole day.
My Harbeth is C7ES3 powered by Nac282/HCDR/Nap250.2 absolutely musical in every aspect. Partnering Harbeth with Tubes are not my cup of tea, tend to find it too gentle, lay back and warm. When partner with Naim electronics, Harbeth becomes lively & lots of grips while maintaining its majestic mid-range.
