System Pics 2016

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015

It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.

Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

This is the Big End, and now the ESL has its feet properly fitted again the books are released from a heavy burden of responsibility! ...

soon to be powered by ONE of these!

Not TWO, as this internet picture.

Hopefully next week or the week after! I am getting rather anticipatory!

Hi George fredrik fisk,

Listened to a pair of ESL 57's many many years ago, I was blown away with how good they were, not heard a pair since.

Looks like your in for an exciting week or two..

Lovely system George!

Hello,

since a month I´ve got a new phono-cartridge for my beloved REGA RP6 - the "Colibri XPG" from "van den Hul":

Since the day it came into my setup, the streamer even got a second to play - the new cartridge simply blows the streaming-part of my 172 away .
Buying a lot of new vinyl since that...

Now what do you think - can a 272 reach up the level of the phono-part?
Or must I add an additional XPS to the 272?

The hole setup is: Lehmann Audio "Decade" as phono-pre with NF-cable fast-audio "black sience" (RCA to DIN) into 172/200 with Snaic and NACA5 to Kudos Super10 / B&W PV1D-Subwoofer.

Now - any suggestions from you?

How big (or small...) is the difference of the streaming/DAC-part from 272 vs. 172?
Will the 272 (with XPS) be able to reach phono-level again?

Of course, full setup will play "better" with the better preamp in the 272...

And no - i will not splitt a new 272 in single-boxes (ND5/282)!

And of course, I have to listen myself at home...

Dear Gianluigi and Dayjay,

It will be lovely and be sure that when I can take a flakey photo or two I shall post them in this thread. Perhaps the system will be assembled by next Friday, but not more than two weeks! I am not happy to have the anplifier couried, given its delicate nature - nineteen times out of twenty is not good odds in my book. I’ll collect it from Quad HQ at Huntingdon ...

And for once a real final system is assembled. How could you upgrade in mono from the best mono speaker ever made - the original ESL - and a proper matched amplifier? Okay that the amp is two and half times too powerful, but the concept is synergistic!

Just have to be careful to keep the volume in bounds. In a small room too loud is not enough to threaten the ESL.

Best wishes from George

As its a lovely sunny morning, I got a bit retro and fired up my old system in the sun room.  Denon DM39 + (ageing) B&W 601S2 .

Sounds  frighteningly good considering the low cost.  - playing Wolgang HAffners "kind of cool" on CD.   The dog certainly approves.  A little wary now of comparing with my main SU based system in living room !

Perhaps the resolution on this pic will be good enough for someone to spot the Naim in my system...

So, hidden amongst the pride of Scotland's audio achievements, a wee hint of an English speaker cable straight from Salisbury... am I right?

Yes - a SuperLumina speaker cable. Well spotted RJ!

After a lot of deliberation I changed my Epos Es11 for some lovely cherry SBL's. I know they are not positioned at their best but I'm happy.

Well done RJS, although PMC might object to you relocating them

If only I could afford 3 lengths of English speaker cable!

Lovely system George!

Dear Gianluigi,

The amp is now paid for, but the wait till I can collect it is excruciating!

The last time will be the 9th May, when I have a day of holiday ...

Maybe sooner!

Best wishes from George

Seems like a judicious decision George. You are giving your ESL all they have always wanted !

But, but what happened to the twin 57 and to the V1/100?

Chag -

Posted on: 26 April 2016 by Noogle

The V1/100 disappeared when George got sucked into a space/time wormhole which delivered him back to the late 1950s...

Posted on: 27 April 2016 by George F

Actually I still have got the NAP 100, and though it will be leaving in the coming weeks, really I blame the old mono Leak Trough Line tuner! It showed me what qualities valves can bring to the party, and of course the ESL is a speaker absolutely made for this approach.

I never play loud, and don’t like loud music. Or at least that stays loud for more than a minute or so!

I rather doubt that my change of direction is going to lead to a stampede towards replay in mono using valve amplification.

Equally, if the Trough Line had not entered the scene last summer, I would still have the beautiful twins - V1 and 100 - today!

I am just champing at the bit to collect the amplifier, as it is now properly paid for.

I may have to wait a short while though because we are too busy at work for me to get away in the five working days. I am not at all happy to have it sent by courier, and in fact doing so is both risky and involves me having a day off to receive it in any case. Plus I’d rather like to meet the people who helped me and did the service. Apparently they want to meet me, as they seem not to come across people who use mono these days!

Best wishes from George

George, the ESL 57 and II poweramp is loverly

most of us could have purchased these way back and concentrated on other things in life

Mono, is the business, I have plenty of old Classical and jazz records in mono I was near buying a dedicated TT for duty, maybe I will some day

Wonder how you manage to enter the plenty classical concerts when you don't like loud music ?

Personally I attempt apro 20-25 various live events every year - very different SPL

enjoy

Dear B-lund,

I go to as many concerts as I can, and sometimes that is handful in a year and sometimes more. I tend to sit nearer the back than the front, so rarely is the effect all that loud. I have not been to a pub gig for twenty years!

George;

I may have missed the rationale for going mono. Where was the trade-off if any? Was your New QII really tuned for if not redesigned for the old 57?

Congratulations for this now quite original but very interesting approach.

Here are my freshly arrived rosewood S400 for my humble second system. May be this an excuse to upgrade the rest ?
