System Pics 2016

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015

It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.

Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

Thanks for the tip about the clock.

Posted on: 23 September 2016 by Mike-B

..........  good tip HH,  its same for any screen/number display,  if you can turn it off, do so.  Naim include the off function & I suspect for good reason,  screens & displays have a finite life & in the past there was a belief that it sounds better with it off as its taking a tiny amounts of power.

In view of your outburst about the use of +1,  please note I've mended my ways.

Very neat and discrete.

PS you'll need to update your profile now.

Wonderful, another 272 owner. One thing - set the display to turn off after 30 seconds or whatever. If you leave the clock on it will eventually damage the display.

Good tip, had to replace the display on my UQ a few months ago as I used it as a clock in the living room now set to turn off. Thankfully the part was under warranty just paid for the labour charge but still cost nearly £100 via Class A.

Monkadil - just to play a devil's advocate for a while if I may:

There is an obvious aesthetic to your set up. In fact it looks rather good
I fear, though, that your N272 and NAP 200 are not performing at their best on your AV rack. Glass shelf is definitely helping the N272 a bit.

Have you planned for a proper rack? At the level of your equipment now, it would make a significant improvement to the sound quality. You are also running very good speakers.

Just a thought...

Adam

Hi Adam,

you are not the first to mention this, HungryHallibut has made the same observation about the need for a HiFi rack.

The sound at the moment is very impressive and if there is some substance to the need for a rack to bring the system to its full potential i fear its the route ill tread. I just need it to be a white colour rack (for OCD reasons).

thanks Mark

Mark, proper support is one of the most important 'upgrades' you will hear. Especially with NAIM.
White should not be too much of a problem - worst case you will have to have it custom made.

It'd sound better if the components were simply a bit further apart, as a start.

I'm at the 'only IKEA, but done my best with it' level of racking furniture, and having an extra shelf (so about 1') between 172 and 250 was a nice boost to SQ compared to having them one above the other.

The furniture looks lovely as it is, but maybe there's scope for a bit of creativity.

Love seeing all the different systems from small to large so thought would share my humble offering too ( as long as I've worked out how to post the picture properly! )

Rewired Rega P3 on custom made oak wall shelf with Rega fono stage. NAC 172XS and NAP 250.2 with A5 to Kudos X2's

Just moved into our new vacation home .. we now have music ..

time to move on to other priorities like furniture .. the PO left us a zero gravity chair and a standard lamp.

An absolutely gorgeous view there John.

Cracking music system too (he says, having just bought one himself...)

Thank you FT .. I toyed with the idea of bringing a "proper" system up here but the Qb is quite a remarkable piece of kit and will be all that we need I think.  It puts out a tremendous amount of music for its size.

Thanks James, much appreciated

They look a little "squat". Is the aspect ratio of the pic wrong, or are they not 63s?

Posted on: 25 September 2016 by Adam Zielinski

It's an aspect ratio - pic wast taken from away and up.

They are genuine Quads ESL 63, recently serviced and moded to work with Naim.

Very nice Adam, never heard the ESL's, I'm intrigued,  what do they sound like?

Like I've stuck my head into a recording session / live performance

Here driven by NDS + 555PS, 252 / SCDR / 250DR + SuperLumina cables and interconnects and PowerLines everywhere.

As Sinatra would sing... 'I'm in heaven....'
