System Pics 2016

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015

It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.

Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

They are genuine Quads ESL 63, recently serviced and moded to work with Naim.

Hi Adam,

What modifications were required to the ESL's for them to work with your Naim amps?

Excuse dumb question, but I have no experience with Quad speakers.

I'm not an expert either -  but something to do with a crowbar protection circuit. Or something like that... Frank F would know more. He tried to explain it to me in simple words, but I must have had a real dumb look on my face last weekend

Nigel - a complete oposite to what you and I are used to with MA300s. Midrange, where vocals and guitars typically reside, has suddenly appeared

A bit leaner on a bass side. Found a simple solution for that - just turn up a volume knob

One Thing Audio make a protection device for the ESL 63 and I understand that when it detects potential arcing the speakers are removed from the circuit which is much more amp friendly than the original Quad method that simply short circuits the system - the crowbar!!  Both methods protect the speaker but the former is better for amplifiers.  OTA also make a "Widget" that provides an easier load for the amp - those ESLs have "Widgets" as well.

They need to go quite loud before there is the potential for arcing as we found out 10 days ago!!  All that was needed was a quick switch off and switch on of the power amp and then a small adjustment to the volume control.

I have successfully run my other pair here In Spain with amps ranging from Nait 2 to 552/300.  I understand that my current 500 is not suitable for ESLs but maybe Richard can qualify this.  I am slumming with NBLs - just a joke, they are also magnificent.

Thank you Frank - I think I understand now

At the risk of sounding silly, with a place like that I wouldn't need any music.

Have you planned for a proper rack? At the level of your equipment now, it would make a significant improvement to the sound quality. You are also running very good speakers.

sorry - but this looks so much neater than all the other big rack set ups that i think it a silly suggestion...

Well - thank your for your qualifying and helpful response. I'm sure you are right.

Not silly at all, should the owner wish to optimise the sound from their significant investment. In my view, leaving it where it is would be sillier.

ooops so sorry but wasn't sure how to fit captions beneath the pic. why does mine look not nearly so nice as the many I saw here that were neat / tidy / well-thought-out / just plain nice ! mine looks like untidy n not well thought out. when I completed the rack I was so exhausted that looks didn't enter my mind but now I can see it is a bit of a mess ...

The remedy is in your own hands - looks are not as important to everyone. If it were me, I'd split the tower in two. An LP12 is never going to work well on top of a stand like that and would be transformed on something better.

How much space do you have to work with, is that the left channel Neat?

Wonderful, another 272 owner. One thing - set the display to turn off after 30 seconds or whatever. If you leave the clock on it will eventually damage the display.

Hi HH

This presumably applies to all Naim displays? I've been leaving the clock display on whilst in standby mode on both my SuperUniti and Unitiqute for last 18 months. Any idea what expected lifespan of displays is? I do find it strange that displays on cheap Teacs, Onkyos, Denons etc. last for years with no issue. Why, do you think, cannot Naim fit decent quality displays? Alternatively perhaps they shouldn't offer the option of a clock or display permanently on? The more I think about, the more outrageous I think this is!

Posted on: 26 September 2016 by hungryhalibut

I find a few things outrageous, such as 89 year olds who can hardly see being allowed to drive cars and nearly kill cyclists, but Naim displays are not one of them...

Ok, maybe 'outrageous' was not the mot juste, but disappointing certainly applies. I just find it difficult to get my head round why a manufacturer of pretty expensive, reputedly high quality, equipment would fit parts which are unfit for purpose. Better?!

I leave my display off anyway, so can't get excited about it. I don't like displays anyway and like the system to be as discreet as possible. But yes, it does seem a bit odd.

But the same could be said for electrolytic capacitors or CD mechanisms. I'm sure the majority of dispays will be fine after 10 years constant use but one timy pixel can ruin an owner's 'experience'. Why bother to chance it? At least we have all the options clock/no clock, display/no display, logo/no logo. All my displays are off after 30 seconds and the display lights are off too (as for the most part they can't even be seen to be glowing in daylight!)

sorry just saw the queries.  to HH - yes remedy for neatness I suppose is but room constraints (bedroom) are such that I need to stack the racks. I realize the placement of the linn is not ideal but I can't do much about it atm. I am toying with the idea of possibly devoting a spare room into a music room but it was only recently vacated and need to save first.

to hafler - width wise approximately 12 ft and yeah the neats are not equidistant from the rack. the room is definitely not ideal obviously. windows down one side behind in a room about 12ft by 18 with nooks here and there.

one other thing I saw that struck me was a lot of people have all-naim systems and not s many have a strange hodge-podge of stuff like me. maybe that adds to the neatness (or lack thereof in my case). thanks

Well, Roy, it is the Naim Forum after all. If you were to look at the system pics thread on pink fish media you would feel much happier, and positively tidy compared to some.

hahaha very true .... I guess cleanliness / neatness  isn't my forte !

Don't worry about it Roy - this is not the Good Housekeeping forum. Interesting mix of kit there
