System Pics 2016

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015

It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.

Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

By the way - is that a LeCorbusier otoman?

Afraid not Adam (as lovely as the LeCorbusier is) it's plain Marks and Spencer (i think).

My trusty PMC's are back in place for now. Some recently purchased James Taylor and a little glass of something warming is just the ticket for this cold Sunday afternoon.

Hourglass is a superb album, very well produced too.

Not so taken with Before This World yet.

The outside world thinks us audiophiles have lost the plot....little do they know!

Good work people!!

Nice work on the F connector. Must sound a bit muffled though compared to the left hand speaker

just a bit ;-)

Seeing this picture, then looking at my cables, makes me feel shame...

Of course - the spacing between those white supports is not even. Shame

On a Naim factory tour, I noticed that the speaker wires in the Naim HQ demo room were also supported off the floor in a similar manner.

I see a whole new (renewed?) area of Hi Fi neurosis brewing. I might just buy some shares in a polystyrene company. Could be the next big thing.

Polystyrene, foamed or not, polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, wood, ceramic ... all have different dielectric constants and will affect your sound to the different nth degree, biggest upgrade since buying anything, more than night and day, in fact with the right ones you only need the cheapest amp and speakers money can buy to realise perfect sound quality.

Its no Voodoo, whitch are there to make easier dust removal from ground with Vacuum cleaner

Good work Novichok. You should be applauded for your fastidiousness.

does it help the spacers for NACA5?  The cable still rest on the ground!

So I can sleep better at night. Soundquality is excellence

A couple of new arrivals made it seem appropriate to stick a photo here, and to try to cover up a total lack of photographic talent and the use of a smartphone by using an 'interesting' angle!

Brand new, and towards the last pair of Ovators S-400 made ('as recent as it gets', according to Keith at Naim).  I only got them yesterday, so they've less than 24 hours on them.  But looking forward to having a proper listen come the weekend.

Dave

Well done - welcome to the S-400's owners club
A side note on running in Ovators - they take absolute ages to come on song. Mine continued improving for 3-4 months.
After that I had to re-position them twice to find the best spot.

If you are running Ovators, getting an Ovators speaker connector is something worth doing (if you don't have one already).

Adam

Hi Adam, any chance of posting pics of those speaker connectors?

They come with the speakers don't they? I'm sure my ex demo ones did

Posted on: 11 November 2016 by Ardbeg10y

I don't know why, but there must be a reason why I like Ovators so much. I was a B&W fan, but this shifting rapidly to the not-anymore-produced Ovators. Snif...

Is it the child-proofness?

The wide-dispersion?

The Naim-ideosyncracy?

The plugs?

The looks?

The fact that they are not produced anymore?

The weigth?

The linearity?

Don't know. Something.

Wrong topic, sorry.

My ex-demo didn't have them. But that's OK - my dealer just gave them to me

I note that is USB direct to Mojo. You are likely to find sound quality will improve if you add an isolator between The MM/A and Mojo, because like it's brother, Hugo, it lacks isolation in its USB input, and the inevitable rf noise from the MM is know for reducing SQ. When I had Hugo I used a Gustard U12 which worked very well.

I don't know if you've tried comparing MM outputs. Whilst USB output, especially if set up as a dedicated bus, is better than optical or electrical SPDIF outputs from the MM's own soundcard, that might not be the case into Mojo without isolation - and the degree of difference  may depend on the individual MM. If you haven't already, it might be worth trying the other outputs to see which sounds better - and if either are better sounding than the USB then USB via an isolator is almost certain to improve things further, but in the meantime you can use whichever sounds best.

I try now optical out from MM. Optical out support 96/24bit only :-(
