System Pics 2016

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015

It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.

Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

That all looks rather lovely. I think that, as veggies, we are going to have a challenge on our hands.

That being the case, sex is probably still the best option..

I would advocate sex and vegetarian food as an excellent combination, though not simultaneously in public.

But sex on its own in public is OK I guess...

OK, this getting just a bit off topic now.

How about we get back to System Pics?

If you wish to discuss, Vienna, sex or vegetarianism (or perhaps all three) then by all means start a new conversation in the Padded Cell.

Opera has always been a step too far for me too....until lately when I heard Mozarts Don Giovanni on R3.....amazing........and now top of this years Christmas present list. I must be getting old/middle class.

Just bought all Teodor Currentzis recordings from Mozart (da Ponte Operas)....Freaking good! I have some "old reference recordings" (Böhm etc.) as well, but he plays like a berserker! Highly recommended and SQ wise another dimension.

So give this a try....you find it on hdtracks and qobuz....

Sorry, this was my fault. I read of HH's trip to Vienna, there was a visible lack of recent pictures so I took advantage.. Apologies.

For a minute there I thought I'd stumbled upon the wrong forum!!

Richard calmly puts down cattle prod and chair .. slowly shaking his head he slumps into his chair.

Fantastic - love the Focals. Just looking at your setup, i take it you have the two power supplies stacked together and the 272 on the 300 ?

Posted on: 10 December 2016 by hungryhalibut

If you look closely you'll see that each is on its own power supply.

Ah - couldn't really see from the picture but going into photobucket i can see you're right.

Shame.

Hi, thanks for your comments.  I believe you got it.  The sound is incredible; the problem is that with badly recorded music it is painful to listen.  Too much precision and clarity, any problem will pop up.  With good music, well recorded and executed, and you are transported to nirvana.  I used Marantz before, much, much forgiven system.

I'd try and get the components on to a rack or if you can't do that, try moving the components around so the 272 and 300 don't sit on top of each power supply (stack the power supplies together). You've got a super system, it's just not giving you its full potential. Really worth doing as you can also get the burndy cables dressed correctly , which is key to getting the best from the 300 (and the 272 !)

Thanks for the suggestion, James.   I have not space for a separated rack but can rearrange the the 300 and 272 as you suggest.  Also move the bd and Tivo.  Though I was checking the manual and there is not mention that putting the 272 directly on top of the xps is not advisable.  Likewise for the 300.

Posted on: 10 December 2016 by hungryhalibut

It's well worth rearranging things so that you can accommodate a proper rack, where the boxes are separated and the wires can hang free. At the moment you are missing a huge amount of your system's potential.

Will the burndied reach if the Naim boxes go on the outside shelves with that box that looks like an overgrown tuner below the centre speaker? Both ps on the right. then experiment with what effect on the music replay the other two boxes have in various positions in relation to those.

I've long given up the idea of being a true Naim expert, but how on earth can you see that..?

Hi Massimo,

If you enlarge the photo a bit, it's possible to see that the boxes on the bottom of each 'stack' have power buttons - which means they must be the power supplies.

Neither the 300 amp box nor the 272 have power buttons as both need external PSs.

Cheers,

Ian

Quite so. No magical powers required.

Posted on: 10 December 2016 by Massimo Bertola

Well, it was easy. And I have looked closely, and tried to enlarge the pic.. I must have left my brain at the Ikea.

Totally disqualified, I won't post for one year. Merry Christmas.
