System Pics 2016

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 December 2015

It's that time of year again, so welcome to System Pics 2016. Let's hope it's a happy and healthy year for everyone.

Here's are a couple of pictures of my stuff to get us started: with the exception of a Powerline everything is changed since this time last year, even the carpet and paintwork.

Thanks Ken!

I'd love to see a picture of your setup with the mighty SL2! With that source and amplifiers it must sound heavenly!

What a beautiful room for your system, Mr Fjeld.  I love the colouring of the flooring,  walls etc and the speakers; the prints and rug match; and  the lighting suits it wonderfully. Must be a very relaxing environment in which to listen to music.

Newest addition to system are the Ovator S400, these baby's just work perfectly in this room. Only had them a couple of weeks so looking forward to getting lots of new music for Christmas.

Cool room. Really interesting. Those S400s are very close to the wall. For best sound balance, my S600s are also closer to my wall than I expected.

Well that is nothing but absolutely fantastic! There is something about these Naim boxes which just appeals to me, and combined with the fact that one can keep them, have them serviced and not thrown away is nice. Listening to music in your living room must be quite an event! Thanks for posting the picture!

Thanks for your kind words Mike - and you're right that it is a relaxing place to be when listening to music, although I have to haul a chair half way through the room if I want to sit in the sweet spot. But that's ok and compromises must be made. I'm very happy my wife also listens to music a lot so it's for the benefit of both of us.

I do remember your room with those gorgeous Focals from "last year's thread" and that's just as nice! I believe this years thread would be even better if it had a few pictures of yours

Speakers are 250mm from wall, and sounding fine. Tried them further into room and could not hear noticable difference so left them at this distance

So just got myself a NAP150, so now i'm using the UQ as a PRE very impressed. Will be upgrading to a NAC-N 172 sometime in 2016. Oh and a xmas tree!!

From December 18, 2015

Hi,

That's a great looking system!  I'm sure it sounds fantastic too.  I think the UQ is really impressive for the price.

I've got a UQ too, and I'm just awaiting delivery of a NAP150, so I'll soon be running a very similar system.  I'm also thinking about a speaker upgrade next year, and I wondered what speakers you were using with your UQ/NAP150 combination.

I also think the green RP6 is one of the best looking turntables around.

Hi thanks for the kind comments.

When I got the UQ I was playing it through, Dali Ikon 1's, which I though where great fantastic bass for there size and as they had a super tweter type array very open but not over bright.

I now have some lovely vintage Royd Minstrels, which again for there size have outstanding bass response. Can't put my finger on why I like them more then the Ikons, one thing I will say is that the music just sounds right.

Hope this helps.

Shaun

Hi Shaun,

Thanks for the additional information; that's really helpful.  I've always been interested to hear what the Royds sound like, so I'll have to have a look and see if I can find any anywhere.

My NAP150 has arrived, so just need to get a phono to 4 pin DIN cable, and I can give it a try!

Thanks again!

I have heimdall 2 but never actually tested frey. And heimdall is already expensive... What are the differences? Is it worth the extra money? How about power cables?

thanks Mr Fjeld -- the system is actually in my office where it takes up quite a lot of space -- but yes, i must admit when its delivering some sumptuous music i forget about the slight "inconvenience"...

Hi , there was more information when I switched to Frey 2, but if it would be for full price I would not buy it. Maybe later..

You can look to my profile info.. I have all cables from Nordost (my dealer is also preferring). RCA-RCA is Tyr2, Power cables Heimdall 2 and I have also one pre owned Valhala.

Ah, there it is! But I remember seeing your setup with the fireplace in the middle from last years thread too. The Quadraspire looks great in black - perhaps even more so simply because it isn't so noticeable as some hifi racks which tend to dominate its surroundings. I haven't heard the 300 DR, but the I did listen too the 272/250 DR combination through similar speaker that I have and it was a jaw dropping experience. I'm saving up for that combination with an XPS DR but it will take some time to get there. I guess the 300 DR must be something even more spectacular!

Hi GraemeH,

Just happened to be browsing through the images of systems that I aspire to own and came across the link you put up a minute or so ago. Just so you are aware the link gives access to many more of your pics than those associated with your Naim system - you may wish to amend.

OK - here is my mini saga; not quite extensive as Nigel's remodel, but a pretty significant one nonetheless:

Walked into the living room about 2 months ago to find this:

Definitely one of those "WTF?!" moments.  Had a structural engineer come out and he indicated after inspection that it was settling, but he did not place in the category of "foundation damage" - we had a long drought at the end of summer and into fall.

Here is the "in progress" shot,  You can see the repair on that crack that literall went the entire lingth of the wall to the back of the house:

So now the room is thus and so:

I actually didn't know I picked green shades; they didn't look green on the paint color wheel the contractor brought (they appeared more like taupe), but actually it looks better than what I had thought so I got lucky on that.

And the guitar storage system was also revamped - no more wall hangers since that side of the room (allegedly the dining area, but I think this is a much better use of space.)

The area on the right side of this picture is still a disaster area (you can see the edge of a tool box in the photo), and I just need to get motivated to make the final push; pictures come off the wall a LOT easier than they go back up!

I'd like this room better if it were in Italy...

Unfortunately no new gear; for what I spent these past 2 months on this and the roof on the rental house I could have bought a 250!
