Naim Uniti 2 problem

Posted by: Paul Gravett on 21 December 2015

I'm updating my Uniti 2 to firmware v 4.3 on my Mac but it keeps saying the device has failed to communicate. I have retried several times but still no luck. I'm using the USB to mini-b cable and the USB serial com is recognised on the laptop. I have tried downloading the drivers from the sllabs.com site as recommended by Naim and it appears to work but I suspect this could be the issue.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so where they able to resolve it? Thanks.

Could it be that your mini USB lead isn't fully wired for data? Some are charging only.

Is your Uniti connected via ethernet? Or on wifi?

I tend to get the same issue, but switch off the Uniti for 10 seconds, once the updater states it can't find the Uniti. It then finds the unit once it has finished booting.

Thanks for the advice. The Uniti was wifi and I moved it upstairs to connect it via ethernet. Still no luck so I called Naim this morning and spoke to a very helpful guy named Phil. He went through the procedure and it appeared I had not downloaded the drivers properly. This he did and then tried again but the error message "device has failed to communicate" still appeared.

His opinion was that it was a cable problem. As Blyth had said it could be the mini-usb was not wired for data, I went to a local computer shop and bought one that is. Returned home full of optimism but when connected, it is still giving the same error message.

I am totally gobsmacked. What on earth can be wrong?!  All I want is to be able to use Spotify. Last week I bought a Ruark R2MkIII radio/streamer and that was up and running within about 15 minutes. Any ideas?

I would advise talking to Phil again. He is a legend and can sort most things.

Or maybe you can get your dealer to do the firmware upgrade? Or get a friend with another PC to let you have a go with his?

A few months ago I had a firmware upgrade issue I could not resolve. I have a good relationship with the Swindon branch (Audio T) and took it in. Fixed within a half hour. I'd certainly suggest that route.

The update is applied in 2 parts on a Uniti 2, the first part via USB with the second over your network. The first part updates the preamp/dac side, with the second part updating the streamer board. You must have the Uniti connected via Ethernet for the second part to work, and it is recommended to have the updating device connected via ethernet too (although wifi does work on this in a pinch). It is very important that they are both connected to the same network.

So, is the updater recognizing the Uniti? And if so, is it failing before or after the first part of the update?

Paul does explain above that the update software isn't finding the Uniti2 and Phil at Naim Support having checked the drivers thought it may be a USB lead issue, which it transpires it isn't, so it's the first part of the updating (ie of the ARM code) which isn't working.

So it's something to do with the update software on his Mac failing to talk to the Uniti 2 via the Silex special drivers for the USB port. There was a thread a couple of months back where a member had this problem after installing El Capitan on his Mac. He explained what he had to do to overcome the issue, which was something to do with the way that El Capitan locks down unexpected hardware (which is presumably what it thinks Naim streamers are).

Sounds very much like the problem I've had with attempting Firmware updates using a macbook on my 172 streamer.

I try the new update software and look for updated drivers every time a  new firmware appears and, after considerable frustration,  end up digging out my old windows laptop for nothing but this job.

Is 4.3 the most recent firmware version? Isn't it 4.4?

Latest on this saga. Tried connecting the Uniti 2 using an ethernet cable and replaced my Mac with a Windows laptop. Firmware downloaded but the same error message keeps appearing. Spoke to Phil today and he advises taking it to a dealer which is what I will do. Thanks to everyone who tried to help.
