Outdoor speakers for UQ
Posted by: Nokturnl on 21 December 2015
Hi, I couldn't see any posts regarding outdoor (weatherproof) wired speakers, so sorry if I missed an obvious keyword to search by... I have used b&w outdoor speakers with qute before, cm6, I think.. But they got sold with my last house. I'm thinking of the b&w am1s, because I'll have a rough idea how they sound. I'm in Perth, WA & the online stores have reduced auditioning potential to only a couple of high end stores. They recommend things with several zeroes added to my budget or seem not interested in helping. The am1s are 8 ohm, ok for 20 watt amps, but it all feels like I haven't tried very hard (which all part of the fun to me). Any advice greatly appreciated.
I have a couple of pairs of Q Acoustics Weatherproof Outdoor On-Wall Speaker QI45EW which cost around £125 a speaker if I remember correctly. They sound fine and I'm happy with them. Not sure what your budget is though!
I use Bowers & Wilkins AM-1s. Sound very good with my UnitiQute2.
Thanks for the responses..
Budget about $1000 aud, the am1s are on sale price $895. Not sure if anyone stocks th Q acoustics, I'll have a look. Delving deeper into the availability of all stockists here, I noticed there were far more ceiling speakers (which I've never owned, but my outdoor area has a roof, lights & lining, so I wondered whether they should be considered, or if the lack of walls rules them out).
A lot more brands would then be available to me. Even B&W have rather a lot, & the ccm683 isn't out of budget range at $1059. Considering the complex housing requirements for all weather speakers, would this mean that a lot more has gone towards quality in other areas? Or are they unsuitable for the purpose I want, just a completely different animal altigether, & more for surround sound indoors? The expert in the shop said that "you get what you pay for". Which, although wonderfully reassuring from a longstanding retail outlet, not exactly helpful. He also said they wouldn't audition any speakers outside, including the outdoor ones.
But, I'll see if Q acoustics are stocked anywhere, somehow doubt it.. But probably go with the am1s, as I wanted to install for Xmas to drown out my neighbours.
Thanks again.
In-ceiling speakers can be tricky to set up with regards to acoustics.
I'd recommend going for a ready-made solution e.g B&W AM-1s. They sound good and unlike other outdoor speakers were actually designed as well They do look very good indeed.
Good install speaker cable is a must - Chord, MIT will work well.
lifestylestore sell them in Australia (.com.au) A$500 per pair. They really are pretty good, especially for the money!
They have a Parramatta shop if you're in Sydney? (Edit, I re-read and see you're in Perth)
A little further searching shows "Westan Australia Pty Ltd" are distributers.

Hi Thanks Blythe, I just called them & seem to be more corporate, setting up cafes, hotels & businesses. They don't have stock at their premises as such. They said I could call their outdoor speaker guy who might be able to get them in for me. I found another stockist of Q Acoustics that have a showroom, Aussie HiFi but they don't do their outdoor range. They sell a few.. Canton, jbs, focal, stealth (none of which I've heard of), jamo & Polk. I hope I can find the two you both suggested, and actually listen to, later today. Oh, and thanks for the tip on the Chord, Adam, that does seem to be obtainable, at least.
One question for you both, how are your speakers at lower volumes, late at night? The b&w WM6 I had needed a little too much (for my neighbours) to sound their best.Thanks
My speakers are at my UK home where we don't tend to have the weather for listening at night, so I haven't really tried them at low levels to be honest!
Mind you, today in Sydney isn't exactly warm & dry either!
I never actually auditioned my Q Acoustics inside, so only know that they sound fine in my outdoor courtyard.
Please set th following on your UQ2 with AM-1s:
speakers = large
loudness = yes
this way you will get sufficient bass frequency responce at low volumes, and you are set
To the OP: can you expand on the intended usage? It sounds like you mean permanently wired up outside, and that sound quality isn't a major consideration, just a means of hearing music (or whatever) outside. I ask because if the intent is to have good quality while, for example, having a bbq, there is an easy option of temporarily siting HiFi speakers outside. I've done that, to amazing effect when the garden is large and soft enough to effectively remove room effects from the equation. And raised off the ground, with a thin plastic bag pulled down fully over them (negligible effect audibly in the context), they can be protected against an unexpected shower- but clearly you wouldn't want to leave expensive speakers out in a potentially damp environment for any length of time.
A more permanent HiFi solution recognising the risks would be some secondhand relatively cheap but reasonable quality speakers, and actually seal them in a thin plastic bag - e.g. a bin-liner- ensuring it is stretched tightly across the front baffle (with spacers if need be to keep from touching the drivers). it'll have negligible effect on sound quality although at high sound levels the bass might flap the plastic. If hermetically sealed, including around cables, it will keep out rain and damp, though clearly very susceptible to damage to the plastic, so really only practicable if under cover for primary protection. Of course the plastic can be renewed, and even bags of silica gel,or other moisture absorbant material sealed inside the bag with the speaker.
Has anyone heard the ElectroVoice EVID 3.2/4.2/6.2 series of speakers? These look to be reasonable and a little more "full range" than the B&W and Q Acoustic (and also cheaper).
@Blythe
I just couldn't find any.. But I've got a second slightly smaller second outdoor zone, and I intend to find them and hang them there. Thanks
@Adam
Aha! Those settings might explain a lot! Thanks
@Innocentbystander
I got your message too late, but that's my fault, so thank you. Plastic bags in 40°C I'm not too sure about tbh, though!
@eloise
Hmm now you tell me!
@All
I purchased the am1s, it was Xmas eve, & very little choice. Help on here far superior to the people actually selling the things!
@Adam
I didn't get the Chord cable - the shop keeper pretty much refused saying it was a waste of money on the speakers... I did get another $100 off the sale price without even asking because I replied Oh, I'd better go and look for some other speakers, then. I'll get the cable online at a better price anyway, so extra good tip - thanks!
@All
Thanks for all your help.
Merry Whatever-you-like-mas!
Peace
Good choice the AM1s
Chord Rumour 2 or Chord Odyssey Install will be good
Enjoy!
Merry Christmas
