"Pots8" Modification for 82

Posted by: Martin Zero on 23 December 2015

Hi Team

Just been talking to the renowned Class A regarding my 82 service later in 2016. It was explained that this option might be considered at the same time as the service. Its quite a few hundred quid extra now, so the Q is, any feedback on the + or - of the mod itself, would putting the money toward say, a super cap, be more cost effective?

Many thanks

I think the value of the POTS 8 upgrade depends on the age of your 82. Early models benefit more than newer ones. I had my 82 serviced at Class A - and it made a big difference. ( I think it was POT 8 already). It works well with a Supercap - especially a serviced one. More effective and cost effective than 2 HiCaps.

My 82 was pots5 when I got it. Due to a minor mix-up it was serviced without the pots8 mod and then the pots 8 was subsequently done.

I can vouch for the difference being rather noticeable, and well worth the money.

Generally accepted wisdom is that if you have pots6 or lower it's worth it, but if you have pots7, the difference/cost ratio makes it far less beneficial.

Although opening up the 82 is the only certain way to know what you currently have, there is an easy tell-tale..... if the IR receiver window just below the words 'naim audio' on the front is a dark red plastic rectangle that sits proud of the panel then it is an older 82 , and would probably have left the factory with pots6 or earlier fitted. If the IR window is flush to the front panel, it's a later one.

Hope this helps

Mike

Sorry to go off piste on your thread but I was wondering how can you tell if your pre amp has got the Pots 8 upgrade.  I have a 52 which I bought second hand three years ago and promptly had serviced by Naim.

Steve, unless NAIM can tell you from their service records, then sliding the sleeve off the 52 and reading the POTS version off the printed circuit is the way.

Many thanks to all. My 82 has the proud IR sensor BTW and the serial number 83463. Looking forward to the service TBH, had my 250 done first and that swings like hell now.

Have a good xmas
