Power On or Power Off?

System: ND5XS + XP5XS, NAC 252 + Supercap, NAP 300DR + NAP300PS. For some reason, maybe a bygone sense of frugalness or the fact that my last amp was a Musical Fidelity A1000 Class A that ran very hot, I power off the Supercap and NAP300PS each night then power up around 7pm to 11pm, longer at the weekend. The other units I leave on all the time.
What is the general opinion should I keep all units powered up 24/7? Appreciate your views.
The general learning on the forum is to leave them on 24/7, except if electrical storms are forecast.
(I confess to occasional qualms about this on an eco-leaning basis, but have managed to keep such qualms at bay.)
Naim manuals suggest leaving everything on 24/7, the idle current draw is minimal. My dealer has said some pieces take 24 hours to fully warm up but I've never tested this.
Ive tested this and leaving them on not only sounds better when you want to listen but also saves stressing them with the inrush of current on switch on.
Naim kit does indeed take a while to settle and warm up to sound at its best. Try it for yourself, its easy to hear
Better to leave on 24/7 although the occasional switch off may bring it's own sonic benefits, as pointed out by J.N. in this thread... https://forums.naimaudio.com/topic/500-bloat
Best left switched on as needed except when perceived sonic vagaries induce a sense that a power down might be warranted to restore the system back to its full sonic benefits while taking into account reductions in the lifetime of the capacitors versus the cost of a recap servicing. There you go
.
While you are powered down, you could swap the ND5 for an NDS.....
HH,
The NDS has been on my mind for a while given that my habit now runs to 11,500 CDs with around 8,000 ripped I'm thinking the cost of an NDS spread over the rips or a CDX2 spread over the CD collection is pretty marginal. Something for the New Year!
Thanks for replies.
Andy
The NDS will sound a lot better in your system and as you've got the XP5XS in your system you won't have to get the 555PS straight away ![]()
What does the user manual say? I'd follow that.
According to Chris West at AV options, leaving all Naim equipment powered up creates less wear and tear compared to constant on-off. The exception being during thunderstorm activity.
In addition, although well soaked and hardy against power cycling, it remains true that if something will die, it will die on power up. With that in mind, in the extremely rare case something did die on power up, the cost would be far greater than a decade's worth of power saving.
I'm a big fan of energy efficiency rather than energy conservation. The difference being that efficiency entails no change in usage habits (but needs efficient low power products). It should yield identical results for less energy. Conservation on the other hand is using the same products but less often. Hi fi is fairly low consumption when idling. All those articles about how much your phone charger cost a year just being plugged in have people worried about the wrong thing. I managed to halve my energy bill by optimising the big power guzzlers. But the Naim stays on 247.
Ahh it must be Xmas with this old chestnut popping up again.
Keep the system powered up for the reasons above.
