Hallo to Rega
fred40 posted:Just a little story.
I bought ( my first naim) a cd player cd5x some years ago at an authorized dealer. But from the start it just sounded not right. It was some kind of floating and very warm sound which became wors. My ex wife bought herself a olive green set and it sounded perfect.(btw it stil does)
I thought it was the amplifier so I traded that one in for a Nait XS. A tad better but not much. Turns out the dealer sold me a five years old heavilly F. Word -- ahum) cd player as being factory new. So much for dealers. On the other hand Naim can"t help dealers being unreliable and shady. At the time I was disapointed but it didn"t took me away from excellent sounding Naim gear.
This is extraordinary, but it still happens. A few months ago, a friend of mine bought a new Unitilite on my recommendation; the unit was faulty and was sent back to the distributor (then on to Naim, I presume). My friend was expecting a new Unitilite to replace the faulty one - but the distributor pointed out that they couldn't really exchange a two-year Unitilite for a new one... And that from a large, very well-known, Naim dealer! My friend threatened to sue, and the dealer speedily ordered a new Unitilite from the distributor - a happy ending.
Incidentally, if the OP is disgusted with Naim (or the dealer, or both), why shouldn't he say so?
I'm with Massimo on this thread. Something just doesn't pass the laugh test with regard to the original post. No real specifics are given which would allow one to follow up on the concerns. For what its worth, I have several (many!) Naim pieces and they have been flawless for years. My local dealer has had the same experience even when compared to other highly regarded equipment.

He has every right to say so.
A few more details would help us understand his problems more sympathetically.
Details would also help verify the validity of his public announcements.
Well, a faulty CD5i and a faulty CD5XS.
I doubt if the validity of all announcements on the forum can be checked: posters can express themselves freely, and we have a perfect right to disagree or disapprove.
Personally, I've always been very happy with my Naim gear, I still have a 47-year-old Naim amp working quite satisfactorily - but the OP may have a point when he says that Naim equipment is expensive - we've been through that before, and there's no definite answer to that question.

47 years old? Made in 1968? I don't think so.
A figure of speach ![]()
Er... 2015 minus 1978 is 47, no??? Wait a minute, 37??? Oh, I don't know, 37, 47, 57... who cares? I'm older than the amplifier anyway...
As we say in Polish: happy people don't count the time.
Enjoy your amp! Even if it's 137 years old ![]()
My ESL is fifty-five, soon fifty-six years old! It is a year older than me!
Happy New Year! George
Maybe Pauls Stephenson " my firtst Naimpie".
I some times have the feeling that Naim is ashamed when sometimes things go Slightly wrong, and as a result Don"t aknowledge a mostly minor qc problem.and most certainly do not want to know about it at first.
I have owned some german sportcars over the years famous for their quality But were they perfect. Nein.

True. Yet, I remember as one of my happiest times some years ago, when I had a very pretty Austrian girlfriend and I still lived in Torino, I traveled every other week to Vienna, spent a fortune in telephone bills and trains, and each day's full and true meaning was in counting how many days, how many hours separated me from closing the bag and being off to the station...
(Sorry, off topic: but I'm re-reading Dickens' A Christmas Carol for the tenth time and feel prone to reminiscence..)

And then you've discovered NAIM
Suddenly life made sense.
A true la dolce vita started....
Mine comes From Iceland. A long swim.

My uncle CD5i 2 times and a trip to England. The CD5XS I had also been one walks the factory for repair. For about two years ago I went to my dealer . 20Naim of about 13 units had a bleeding display. My NATI XS had trouble it got " stuck" in volume scarce due to software problems. Is there anyone here in this forum, that can say Naim 's a good product . Compared to the price are we complete fool . From all the comments that have come , then most had closed their eyes to this.

assuming you do move to Rega, make sure you are content with your Rega dealer - he will be your principal point of contact.
Rega have a web-site, but I don't think they have a forum. At least here you can normally get ad-hoc advice before contacting your dealer/Naim and ........................... when things don't work out, you can vent your frustration before moving on.
The guy who started this thread has 120 replies. I think most people on this forum are seriously addicted to Naim but half are in denial. What he proposed by going to Rega it was like suggesting to drink good alcohol but without the alcohol content!
A nice similitude. As for myself, I have never been in denial for one single minute - I am addicted, and although it is a costly addiction compared to alcohol, it has much less social impact..
Naim, Rega, Bose... If you like what you have and enjoy listening to the music, that is all that counts!
It's amazing how these 'hit and run' posts creates a three page thread with no real dialogue from the OP.

Oh dear! why did you keep buying Naim then? what took you so long to change brand? why do you think your specific set of circumstances applies to all of us?
i hope you got the kit carefully restored to working order before selling on!!

53 replies and growing!
Did you get a good return on your Naim to apply on your Rega?
Enjoy your Rega!
And may you have a prosperous new Year!
Now over 120 replies, and yes I look forward to conversing on the Forum, however, with a open mind!
A lot can be learned, like different results with different sources, example a 25K CD 555 vs a 13K NDS. And beta testing upgrades with firmware, that can improve Ndac's as well as Melco's etc....
But don't fool yourself, it's always about da money!
JMHO!
