Headphones for SN2
Posted by: MartinKocurek on 30 December 2015
I am thinking about new headphones for my SN2.
it is difficult to borrow headphones for testing so your recommendation is appreciated.
I am thinking about AKG K702 or AKG K713 or Semnheiser HD650
thanks for help
HD650 are excellent. I have a pair myself. The HD800 are definitely different, and better, although they are a somewhat different presentation (more "ear speaker", more like a Stax). Top recording engineers I know well swear by the 650s
OK, thank you
With my SN2 I use Audeze EL8 closed back headphones.
Extremely comfortable and great sounding.
I did have HD650s before but I just couldn't get on with them for a couple of reasons - I found them really uncomfortable for my head and ears, (my pair had a vice like grip on my head!), but also I had not really taken into account how much the open back nature of them would affect the rest of the occupants in the room (my mistake completely not thinking about that...).
The HD650s did sound good though.
Guess its just me and Sennheisers don't get on too well - Headphones are very personal choice.
Good luck in your search Martin!
(I have HD800s too, so am making comparison based on countless hours with both -- also the Sennheiser headphone preamp/DAC thing, which is interesting and useful)
They are already quite expensive, for this money I could consider also HD700.. But I am nit sure I want to invest so much money
HD650 then -- very very good product
Jon, thank you for your hints.
Three weeks ago I got myself an Ultrasone Signature Pro for my SN2. Like it
I compared at the High End show in Munich some headphones and I liked the Ultrasones the most. But I have to say it was no A/B comparison.
The headphone out on the SN2 isn't that great and I held back on getting decent headphones until I got a better headphone amplifier. That said the HD650 should still be quite an enjoyable listen.
Hi Martin
AKG K812
sold via AKG Pro dealers.
Do not have SN2, but used SN1 headphone amp and Sennheiser HD650 in past (before got V1). Maybe SN1 headphone amp is not that great in context of top headphone amps, especially built for this purpose, but is not bad at all. At very least it is better than Pro-ject headbox II headphone amp I still own. SN2 headphone amp should be even better.
I recently bought a pair of HD650s and am really enjoying them.. I have used Grado headphones previously, and the 650s are very different. I have discovered, as noted in another thread, the 650s need a bit of thought on how to drive them if they are to sound their best.. and some amps can make them sound quite average, the Dragonfly USB DAC amp for example. (But can't comment on SN2). Oh yes, if you get them new, they do need 24 to 48 hours of running in for the bass to tighten and the highs to open out.
