Who uses their kit for more than music??
Posted by: Richy on 01 January 2016
Having just bought some new kit, I am trying to care for it dearly...
Do people use their Naim hi-if / speakers purely for music? or use it for everything (i.e TV / film usage also)?
I just wondered as part of me wants to use the kit for everything, but another part of me thinks it's almost sacrilege to use quality kit for everyday tv, trashy soaps etc!! I may sound stupid asking this but is the life of my kit likely to be greater if I just save it for 'best' (I.e 5-10hrs of music per week), or should I make the most of it (I.e 30-35hrs per week of TV / films / music).
Also can't quite bring myself to leave it on 24/7!!
I appreciate all responses / guidance.
Cheers
Richy
I'll deal with the 24/7 bit first, Richy: just do it :-)
About just using your Naims for 'best'..... a few years ago I bought a very decent pair of brogues. I was wearing them for best. A good friend urged me to wear them normally, and get the use, and what's more, the pleasure. They feel bloody fantastic. Even in the cornershop. Hope that helps.

Occasionally for movies. That's it. And I'll leave my kit on 24/7, when not in use on mute. Also when I'm away. I only power down the kit when I'm on holiday.
Hi Richy,
Pre outs from AV processor go into 552 AV input set to unity gain for TV and movies; oh and also the odd 5.1 music Blu Ray when the mood takes me.
Kit on 24/7; I've done this for the 25 years I've owned Naim kit other than holidays and the twice a year rebuild when power down is unavoidable.
TV and movies are so much more immersive through the main rig/speakers with the AV amp just doing decoding and surround/sub channels.
Give it a go; you know you want to!
Cheers,
Ian
Yes, I use mine in the living room for AV duty. It's on 24/7. 2 channel PCM direct from a blu-ray can sound suprisingly good!
My kit is in the living room beside tv. I use it for tv, series, movies and music late evening when wife and daughter go to bed. I had a 5si and recently went to superuniti. With proac imaging and soundstage I swear you don't need 5.1. I really like current system because it doesn't ask you to raise volume, the bass is fine at low volumes.
For music I mostly stream tidal but sometimes play a vinyl.
Oh I was to forget, I'm using it too for signing karaoke. Plus it's a clock and a wake alarm. Next will be adding an antenna for fm.
Happy new!
Tv and blu-ray are both digitally connected to the ndx. Watching a movie is a lot more fun that way.
TV, Blu-Ray, Apple TV all connected to 272.
Yep, always used my Naim stereo for A/V via the Unity Gain inputs on my 552 as part of my 7.1 surround system. Sky HD, Oppo 103D BluRay player, Amazon FIRE TV, all through the system. It's all switched on except if I'm away for more than a couple of days.
So it seems the consensus is to just to use the kit for everything and enjoy it. I am happy with that! :-)
Regarding leaving things on 24/7...
I completely understand how long it takes naim kit to come on-song, I did a test yesterday and it was 3hrs from turning on to reaching a stable temperature!. BUT, the ONLY thing that makes me weary of leaving things on 24/7 is not power surges etc but the buzzing sound that is head through the speakers! Even on mute there is an audible white noise type sound which may only be audible from a few inches away but surely can't be good for the speakers can it???
Thanks for the help
I am v much enjoying being a Naim product owner :-)

I use a DAC-V1 and Supernait2 for TV, Blu-ray, and music. Might as well get your moneys worth in my view. Same policy with all my previous hifi systems, and all of them left on 24/7.
All on 24/7 apart from a maintenance switch off for a day every couple of months.
DVD/Blu-Ray => NDX digital in => SN2 here.
Apart from music, use the System for films (streaming and TV) and DVDs but tend to watch general TV via the TVs own (duff!) speakers.
It does feel like a natural hub now, especially with so many inputs being provided. The TVs are now built with browsers in and output optical cable, so Chromecasts and more direct HDMI only kit can hub through the TV and output through the TVs optical.
Others with their own optical outs can go direct, so pretty much all AV goes through the 272. Blu-Ray, Apple TV, spare DAB radio out, streaming kit as chosen etc.
Absolutely use mine for dramas (radio ), poetry, sound scrapes, and some film.. The Naim equipment is far too capable to limit it just for music.... There is soooo much more to audio replay than just music.

It's expensive equipment so make the most of it. I leave mine powered on 24/7, optical out from the TV into ND5 and TV speakers disabled in settings. Everything sounds good.
I also use it to power my AV sound for tv, blu Ray, and Netflix etc...
good experiences - great sound also for movies...
My listening room is primarily used for music (70% usage I would say).
That said, I do have a flat screen TV mounted in the room and I have a satellite box, PS4, and Mac Mini all feeding an Oppo 105... the Oppo feeds a single line into my NDX, which in turn feeds a Hugo TT... TT goes out to my 252. So I do use the system for everything... but music is the primary activity (Streaming via NAS to NDX> TT is my primary source, followed closely by vinyl).
Main system in the living room is purely music. I could use the unity gain on the 282 but I don't. Prefer to keep the AV setup in the same room completely separate.
But I do use the UQ2 in the office for computer audio like web conferencing with clients. Since I work from home, the office Naim system gets about 9 hours of use a day, much of that for web conferencing.
Both systems on 24/7.
Living room - used for music, videos, TV, radio - you naim it ![]()
Music room - used, errrr... for music.
Naim equipment is always left on, amp in 'mute'.
@Richy
Concerning your noise. I dont know if you can but my superuniti has a ground switch and putting it on 'floating' solved a noise problem that i could never totally gid rid of before and it magically solved it. the system is now dead silent, yours should be too.
Also beware of anything with a dimmer in the same circuit. Its terrible how dimmer sends noise back in the main power.
You may have to deal with a ground loop. Ground loops are intrusive and can go across devices that are not even turned on. Try to disconnect every source one by one and see where the noise comes from.
If its a ground loop you can sometime solve it by having everything connected at the same wall outlet.
Hi Richy,
Like many others, our Naim music system provides a most welcome boost to the quality of sound from our TV as well. We also leave it on 24/7, except during thunder storms or holidays away from home.
However, we did find an intrusive, low level hum/buzzing sound coming from the speakers. The TV has what's called a floating ground (others can correct me on the precise terminology here), so it was using the Naim music system's signal ground as an earth pathway, feeding a low level earthing signal through to the music system. Fortunately, this has been very easy to cure.
If you search for a "ground loop isolator" on your favourite internet search engine, you should find some very inexpensive devices (effectively a small isolating transformer) that allows the sound to pass through, while blocking DC currents.
After installing one of these between the TV and the Naim pre-amp, no more buzzing.
Hope this helps, FT

Having the same AC power source will most likely not resolve a geound loop. An effective way is to install an islating transformer, between an offender and an amp. Typically it has to be put somewhere in the path of a signal between an offending source and an amp.
@Richy
just wanted to add that tv cable can cause ground loops! it can be solved by routing it trough the power strip cable input then to your tv box with a second cable.
I just read the posts above, it appears a better solution. Hope you solve that noise!

The same for me except for blu-ray, I only have a DVD player. I connect it in digital into the Supernait's onboard DAC. I am going to move cinema duties to another room, though, where I will probably use a 2nd hand UnitiQute for vinyl, TV, cinema, FM and Internet Radio!

I am not sure if I understand fully what people are saying!...
I only have one input to the qute which is a digital cable from the TV. I have disconnected this and removed power from the TV completely. Even when muted, if I put my head up to the tweeter I can hear a white noise type buzzing sound; it is only audible when right up next to the speaker. Moving the switch from ground to floating makes no difference.
Is is it ok to leave it on 24/7 with this noise?? Surely everyone must get this as like I say, I have it with even when the TV etc is disconnected.
:-S

Welcome to the famous NAIM hummmmmmm ![]()
It's perfectly normal and OK to leave your UQ on and muted, when not in use
