Who uses their kit for more than music??

Posted by: Richy on 01 January 2016

Having just bought some new kit, I am trying to care for it dearly...

Do people use their Naim hi-if / speakers purely for music? or use it for everything (i.e TV / film usage also)?

I just wondered as part of me wants to use the kit for everything, but another part of me thinks it's almost sacrilege to use quality kit for everyday tv, trashy soaps etc!!  I may sound stupid asking this but is the life of my kit likely to be greater if I just save it for 'best' (I.e 5-10hrs of music per week), or should I make the most of it (I.e 30-35hrs per week of TV / films / music).

Also can't quite bring myself to leave it on 24/7!!

I appreciate all responses / guidance.

Cheers

Richy

I use mine in a 5.1 system. The music side is mainly for me but the whole family enjoy the AV set up.

Normal TV usage is vastly improved and blu rays at volume are awesome.

It also helps when it comes to (some) upgrades as I can sell them as upgrading the AV system as well as the music

Hi Richy

If you only hear the sound when you put your ear a few cm from the tweeter, then it is nothing to worry about.

TV optical to one input on the  Qute.  So sound fronm Sky box, BRP and CDR  are fed  to the  NAIM system.

Thanks all for the replies..

Ive re-laid all wires and plugged the qute in separately from all other kit (TV,  blu-ray etc) so now the hifi can be left on 24/7 whilst other kit goes into an e-on energy saving plug so I'm as green as I possibly can be whilst having great sound!

Really enjoying having a proper hi-fi (even if it is only a qute with some PMC 21s) :-). Upgraditous is already whispering in my ear!!

To paraphrase: do not understimate the power of the Naim side

As to upgradiatis - Master Yoda said it wisely: afraid you will, yes!

Enjoy your Qute - it is a seriosuly good performer.

I use a Cambridge Receiver for surround sound, and feed my 282 (250/Allae) with FL & FR channels.  Centre is also fed into my original NAP140 running an n-cent.

TV just doesn't sound right with the tv's crappy wee speakers.

5.1 front L/R surround sound preamp out fed into my 252 AV (unity gain) input, so my 5.1 front L/R is delivered via the NAP300, Paradigm S6 speakers. I have a pair of MK7's parallel up to provide the centre speaker powered from the Harman Kardon surround amp. Sounds pretty good.

I have also taken the headphone out socket of the TV into the 252 to listen TV via the paradigm speakers.

Naim boxes always left powered up except for holidays or thundery weather.
