Naim 552 mono
Posted by: rigsby1 on 03 January 2016
For some time now I have noticed that my 552 will only allow both speakers to work if I have the mono source button on as well as the source selection-no matter what source socket I use on the rear panel, for my NDS. I only use NDS as a source. If i turn off the mono button only the right speaker plays and also this actually is clearer than when both speakers are playing.(?). Please can an expert advise me, I assume its a programming issue but I cannot correct it.

Are we talking about one recording? If so it might be worthwhile saying what recording.
In my experience mono recordings come equally from both speakers. Sounds like a problem with the pre or the source ( or the interconnects) if it only comes from one channel when in stereo mode.
first thing i would do is swap the interconnects ( right and left) and see if it jumps to the other speaker.

So you are not getting any signal from the source left channel. Since you tried other inputs, it seems that your problem is not at the 552 end but either A) the interconnect from NDS or B) the NDS. Try another interconnect cable.

Are you using the RCAs? The WBT Next Gens have a very small contact area on them to reduce multiple contact points. However, it does mean that if you aren't carful then you can easily have no contact and hence no sound on that channel.

Try using the din to din interconnect that came with the NDS. You may need to program the NDS to output via its din sockets though. At the moment you are listening to the right channel only, but through both speakers. It must sound very odd.

Unlikely; but just to cover the basics, I presume you've checked that the balance control hasn't been turned to the right?

If that was the case, pressing the mono button would have no effect. It has to the the NDS or, most likely, the phono lead.

Two days on, are we still on one channel?

Hi,
Thanks to all, my dealer is sorting the problem now.

I'd be interested to know if my suggestion was right, or completely off the mark! Let's hope you get it sorted out soon - it will be nice to get proper stereo again....

What was the fix if you don't mind saying?

Hi, The fix was the NDS was stuck on one channel - so back to naim to sort.
