New Turntable?
Posted by: Nigel 66 on 06 January 2016
Just seen that this has been launched at CES. I have attached a link, so please 'click' on Turntable below - hope that this works.
Is this Turntable of interest to anyone?
If it doesn't, try cutting and pasting:

It is identical to the old 1200. If the price is right, I hope it will stop people paying stoooopid money for second hand unserviced, abused ones. Having said that, I have always been very fond of the 1200s specially when fitted with a well balanced, serviced and properly set SME 3009. A true icon indeed!

Everything I'm reading suggests it looks like a 1200 but the direct drive is all new and the materials quality throughout substantially higher than the already very nice 1200. And I think you'll find that Technics is also well aware of what the old 1200s are going for and will price this new high end version appropriately given much enhanced design, better materials, and lower production numbers.
Yes, with only 1200 being made i guess they won't be cheap but when you consider there are people out there asking over a grand four some examples i do not expect the special edition to come any cheap. I remember buying them a couple of years ago (boxed), in pairs, for as less than £300. With the vinyl revival prices have rocketed.
$4000, apparently, for an SL-1200G. Ulp!
A new rip off every day.

The SL-1200GAE is limited to 1200 players, no price for that yet.
The G 'unlimited' is $4000, so can only image what the limited will be, double ? At current conversion that's GBP 2,733, you'd have to be a big Technics fan.
Considering the engineering quality will be right up there with the best, and that both VPI's and GPA's DD offerings are in the £30k region, $4000 (and likely £4000) is actually rather reasonable if they can get the sonic results, especially as it'll include what appears to be a revamped tonearm. Still, we'll have to see I guess.

Well this is a very nice surprise! Worked years with the 1200s. The old one was (is) really good and if this is improved and enhanced it must be awesome!
