Connecting Stage line
Posted by: Ronsie on 09 January 2016
Can anyone advise how to connecting a Stage line to an N272 preamp? Do I need a PS? If so, which one?
Thanks.
Yes you do need a PS.
If you're lucky you might pick up an old iSupply 2ndhand. If not then a Flatcap, HiCap or Supercap can power a Stageline.
Whatever you get, you'll also need a special 4pin to 5pin grey interconnect that Naim can supply to order.
If you get an iSupply, and are lucky enough to track down which was originally sold for stageline, it should come with this lead (some iSupplies were sold to connect to other devices, but you can use ANY of them if you then obtain this lead). Connect the iSupply to the 5pin socket on the Stageline and connect the grey 4-5 from the Stageline's other socket to your 272's 5pin analogue input.
If you do this with any of the other psus, connect stageline to PSU using the SNAIC5 black lead. Then run the grey 4-5 lead from the PSU's output socket to the 272.
Remember that if you get a Supercap, it only comes with a mains lead, so you'll also need to get BOTH the SNAIC5 and the 4-5 interconnect.
Both the Hicap and the Flatcap come with a SNAIC5 as well as a mains lead, But you still need to buy the grey 4-5 lead.
All of the above said, if you bought both the 272 and the Stageline from the same dealer, they should have KNOWN that the two won't work together without a PSU. Even if you got them from different places, if the Stageline vendor knew that you had a 272 they should have brought this to your attention.
I ran a stageline powered by a HiCap for years. It sounds great, but I COULD have run it straight off my 152XS back then. I had a choice. In your situation the cost of having to buy a flatcap to go with the Stageline is high, and you could easily have a very good non-Naim phono stage up and running for a lot less money.
I'd advise bringing this to the attention of your dealer.
Hope this helps

Ronsie,
Welcome. You should tell us about the rest of your system and include it in your profile. It will give us some context for responses. I think the Stageline can be great VFM in a Naim system, but definitely depends on what else you've got and how serious you are about vinyl replay versus streaming.
Ronsie, There are two variants of the Stageline. Earlier ones had one DIN, later ones had two. Someone else will be able to explain the significance of this in terms of ps options. (I only had the early one and was very happy).

Hi Ronsie
I had an i-supply linked to my stageline and using the 5 DIN cable on the Power supply. I then had Naim send me a 4 Din to 2RCA so I could connect to my Qute2...but also Chord do a few variations of the 4 DIN.
if you only have the one DIN plug on the back you can buy adapter cables.
It works really well. However I have just upgraded to a flatcap after 18months.

Thank you all for the great feedback received.
I'll also update my profile as to the equipment I have.
