Led Zeppelin Downloads
Posted by: Mr Paws on 11 January 2016
Hi to all, I'm looking to replace some of my old Led Zeppelin CD's with downloads and I was wondering how they sound ? I'd like to buy Led Zep 1 , 2 and 3 replacing old rather dull sounding CD's.
Any advice gratefully received..
Personally I think they are great with III being the best of the bunch.
There are others on here who hate them.
You pays your money, you take your chance.
Hi IANG,
Thanks for your reply, I've decided to go for Led Zeppelin II 24/96 (Deluxe) from Quobuz. Never used them before so all things crossed..
I'll report back soon..
In principle they sound great but a bit polite. I like the upgrade the most for the first two albums. After that the benefit get's smaller.

Got that Sir Thankyou. I'm sending Led Zep II to my NAS right now so looking forward to hearing it..

The Barry Diament mastered CDs from the '80s are far superior to the new remasters, and the original early vinyl pressings better still.
I agree that II and III are the best of the hi res versions and they are much better than the cd versions. I thought the alternative version of In through the out Door was good also - a more rock/guitar mix. But something very odd about the mastering for IV and Physical Grafittii.
Update, I downloaded the FLAC & WAV versions and the WAV comes out the best in terms of the fullness of the sound and more of a gruntier sound too.
It's been pointed out on here that hi-res downloads sound much better than the CD's and I'd agree with that. I have the 1990's version of LZ2 and it's always pounded a bit 'shut in' to my ears but this new remaster sounds excellent so I'm happy even though go it cost me £19.00 !

A lot of people have the music in FLAC format and ensure that transcoding to WAV happens on the server. It has a couple of benefits:
1. Smaller files
2. Mostly easier to get in flac format
3. Tagging is a bit less cumbersome.
Mr Paws
Even if you intend to store the files as wav it makes sense to download them as flac as they will download more quickly (smaller files), are easier to tag and can be decompressed/converted to wav without any loss in quality compared to the original wav files.

Hi Steve,
Yes I agree so the WAV version is on a stick now and the FLAC is on my NAS. My NAS won't play WAV,AIFF or any other file type other than FLAC so there you go. I'm not sure why this is but its a bit of an inconvenience. By the way I use a ReadyNAS Duo Mk1,Logitech Server. I've been looking around to see what te problem could be but not found out how to sort this issue out.
Thanks for your reply

You might want to consider to move to a NAS which can work with music servers which are capable of doing the required FLAC/WAV transcoding. The NAIM streamer sound considerably better with WAV.
