24/192 ALAC still unplayable?

Posted by: Frits Van Der Veer on 13 January 2016

Hi all,

Just bought 2 albums on HDtracks in 24/192 ALAC. Tried to play them on my superuniti (latest software) but so far no luck. I was blaming jRiver (i use DLNA play) , restarted all systems etc etc. but still not luck.

Then thought may be search for 24/192 ALAC and superuniti. Then i got an closed topic on this topic saying it is not working.

Is this still the case and did i just bought a bunch of unlistenable ones and zeros?

AFAIK Naim only support upto 24/96 Apple Lossless (ALAC) files on their streamers.

You can easily convert from Apple Lossless to FLAC with no loss of quality.  Alternatively you may find a setting in J.River which enables you to transcode everything to WAV for transmission to your streamer.

As Eloise says, try converting to FLAC. If you don't already have the software for this, you can do it with XLD.

Or if running Windows try dpPowerAmp or you should be able to do it within J.River I think.

Hi Frits,

Sadly, the SuperUniti can't play 24/192 ALAC directly which is annoying.  I find the easiest solution, which saves converting, is to transcode everything to WAV in JRiver.   You can do this by setting Audio - Format to PCM 24 bit in the DLNA Servers window (accessible from Options/Media Network/... Add or configure DLNA Servers.

Do you use JRemote with JRiver BTW?  I've not had much luck with this as it works for a while then loses all synchronisation.

Hi all

Thanks for the swift answers.

I will try/experiment converting and/or changing my jRiver set up to transcode to Wav. Not sure it will influence my DSD/SACD-ISO play.

Chris: yes I use jRemote app. Its working fine for me. MC20 @ Mac mini.

Thanks Frits.  I upgraded from MC20 to MC21 not long after buying the SU, and had a feeling that JRemote was reliable at first.

Can you play the files from a memory stick, plugged into the front USB?

As to buying from HD Tracks - I recommend AIFF. Same price, but the file is uncompressed. Which in the era of cheap storage does not matter that much.

Taking a memory stick with some 24/192 ALAC files to my Naim dealer for a SuperUniti demo was the first time I discovered that they couldn't be played.  I had a selection of other formats so didn't think much of it the time.

Hi Frits,  thanks for that it has helped me to get my views sorted out.  Most of the problems I'm getting seem related to when a track changes.  This does look like a known issue, so I'll pursue it on the Interact forum.
