Cartridge damage
Posted by: Gurbinder on 17 January 2016
So guys I need your help, I have damaged the exact cartridge on my 3 month old RP6.
I was cleaning the turntable and the cloth caught the needle and it is now bent.
My question is can the needle be repaired by Rega or should I just replace or upgrade???
Help required as not happy and had just bought some new lp's this morning!!!!
Thanks in advance.
No one??
Gurbinder, sorry to hear of your cartridge mishap. You join a big club to which many of us have won our membership many times over...
What cartridge do you have fitted to the RP6? Most of the Rega cartridges have fixed Styli so a new cartridge may be the only viable option. Whichever cartridge you have, at the very least it'll need a new stylus. Most MM carts (except for Rega) have removable and replaceable stylus assemblies. If you have a Rega cart then I'm fairly sure it's either a rebuild or a new cartridge I'm afraid, although you should speak with your dealer - who knows, they may be able to arrange a favourable trade-in for you.
In the meantime, it's worthwhile having a spare cartridge standing by for its such occasions. Something cheap but capable makes a lot of sense and will keep the tunes spinning; something like an Audio technics AT95E or, if you want to keep it Rega (ish), a Rega Carbon, which is closely related to the AT-91.
Richard, thanks for the reply the cart is a Rega Exact so I guess it may be a new one, did not know about part exchange.
Gurbinder, I don't know about p/x either but it's worth your while finding out from your dealer whether this is an option in this case. Some cartridge makers give you a fixed trade-in allowance on your old cartridge against a new one.
Just a suggestion - you may wish to purchase a Rega stylus guard for the future....
They may be fiddly but they do prevent accidents like this.
Sorry to here of your problem - so easily done.
Use a big fat makeup brush to clean my TT and always put the stylus guard on when not using just in case SWMBO decides to dust. Also careful of the sleeves to the baggy jumpers I tend to wear at this time of the year, just in case I catch the stylus when changing an album.
Hi Gurbinder,
As Richard said - welcome to the club!
I had my stylus re-arranged courtesy of one of our cats a few years ago, fortunately my house insurance covered the damage - perhaps your will?
Other salient points covered above.

I will check but the cart is £255, so may not be worth it.
I suppose that the next question is do I replace with the same or upgrade but will stay MM?
Sorry to read this. It was a home contents insurance job for me when I performed a similar feat.
As for a further upgrade but 'stay MM', I'd have thought you're pretty near the top of the tree with the Exact on your RP6. (edit: But it might depend on which phonostage you're using, assuming you don't want to change that too).
Chris
Many a time and oft have I done the same, to Exacts and more expensive esoterica. Rega will give you a part ex even for a mangled cart as they recycle the materials in the process of making new ones. I think it's worth about 20% off a new one.
I was thinking maybe Dynavector 10x5??

Nice cartridge. Better than a Rega Exact replacement? In your system, of which forum readers know nothing apart from your record player, only you could say.

The rest of the system consists of Uniti 2 & PMC twenty 21's.
The phono is a Rega MM and speaker cables are Chord Odyssey 2.
I am also looking at Nagaoka Mp300/500.
Thanks Gurbinder. When you write, 'phono is a Rega MM', do you mean your phonostage is a Rega Fono? If so, I think you will probably be happiest with the Exact. My opinion only, others will differ.
C.
Yes it's a Fono MM MK2, so may just see the dal on a new Exact.
A replacement Exact will cost less than the standard price because Rega offer body credit trade-ins. If you were happy with your Rega cartridge before then I wouldn't make a change. If you were hoping for more from the system, then something like the Dynavector 10x5 would be a very worthwhile step up. You will need to raise the arm with 2mm spacers to do this. The 10x5 has a lower output so you would need to use more volume on your Uniti, but the benefit is that MC sound with more resolution, better order and an overall more engaging sound.

Frank.

Rega is rebuilding my cartridge as it is only 2 months old, I think my dealer may have called in a favour.
I have no idea of cost must be cheaper then £194 to change.
Best outcome, given Fono, imo.

My wife pretzeled a Linn Asaka way back when that was a thing. I sent it to Linn and they bent it back into shape. Damned if she didn't do it again a month later! This time, they pronounced it beyond repair. The cleaning lady did the same thing to a Lyra a few years later, and I took it as an excuse to upgrade. No one dusts the TT any more.
As you've found out, it can't hurt to ask!
So guys the update is Rega have agreed to rebuild my cartridge, but the dealer who I buy my stuff from said he did not want me to be without my turntable for up to two weeks while the cartridge was being repaired, so he removed the exact cartridge of there new demo unit and gave it to me and said when mine is rebuild they will put it on their turntable.
imjust have to pay for the rebuild.
A very good dealer you have there.
Rega thinks you're messy.
