NDX not seeing Unitiserve on the network

Posted by: Neil Bennett on 17 January 2016

I was wondering if anyone can help. I recently upgraded for streaming into my 552/500 from a UnitiQute2 to an NDX, but it does not seem to be able to “see” the Unitiserve. I never had any problems with the ‘Qute, so am not sure why the NDX won’t find it: is there a difference in the settings? I can’t see anything in either the Unitiserve or NDX reference manuals. The NDX is connected to the Network router OK because it’s getting Internet radio with no problems. The Unitiserve is connected OK because the PC is seeing/controlling it fine, so not sure what the issue is? The Unitiserve is hard-wire connected to the router and the IP address specified in the PC set-up browser and the NDX (and previously the Qute) is connecting wirelessly to the router. I've seen a few similar issues in pother posts, but not exactly this one, as far as I an see. Any suggestions gratefully received, since the net radio/USB/tuner all sound better, but the main purpose of upgrading was to improve the streaming quality....

 Thanks + regards,

 Neil Bennett

Is your NDX new? If not, it may have the previous user's settings, and still be looking for their server, not yours.

In addition to any such issues, I would recommend that you change your network setup. Apart from being less reliable, WiFi from server to streamer gives worse sound quality.

If you can't wire your NDX to your router, can you move the Unitiserve closer to the NDX and connect them both to a switch? Then turn off the NDX internal WiFi, and stick an Airport Express or similar on the switch as well to connect the NDX to the internet and your Naim app device.

Several steps:

  • Make sure that your network runs a DHCP protocol
  • Perform a 'factory reset' of your NDX
  • Ensure the connection is as follows: ISP router > switch > both US and NDX plugged into the switch. If you have a NAS plug it into the switch
  • Minimum ethernet cable requirement: cat 5e

I also suspect this is probably to do with IP addresses. If everything is set to DHCP, as it is out if the box from the factory, it should work fine. There is no difference between the UQ2 and the NDX in this respect. I don't know why you would be using a PC browser to do setup, or of what. Anyway I'm sure we can help you sort it all out, or Phil will be back at Naim support tomorrow and he will certainly be able to help you.

This is very unlikely to do with IP addresses, especially as you say the NDX works with web radio etc. It is most likely to do with UPnP multicast discovery and IGMP snooping implementation on your broadband router switch ports.

So as you have issues, do ensure your broadband router has IGMP snooping DISABLED if it has this setting.

Failing that you might need a simple consumer network switch like a little Netgear that you connect your router, NAS and NDX to.. you might need a seperate wifi access point, such as Apple Airport Express into the switch.

if you know how to do network pings, you can ping the multicast discovery address  and you should see all the UPnP discoverable devices responding.. Let me know if you want the details on how to do this. This issue is seen quite regularly and is often seemingly down to sloppy broadband router software, and this approach has helped many on the forum with similar sounding issues.

Thanks for the suggestions. Didn't think it was an issue which would be solved by powering everything down/up again, but it was (I was away all last week and didn't get a chance to update). Now struggling to think how to connect with an ethernet cable from the NDX to the router/get a switch for it/the US. Not sure I can accommodate the US and/or the router in the same room as the NDX, and as is would need probably a 30M cable run round the outside of the house; would this be an improvement vs wireless?

This suggestion is certainly worth a try. The idea of hard wiring the NDX and the US to a switch should make these devices *think* that they are hard-wired despite the wireless jump handled by the Airport Express to the router. I ran my US this way for a while and it resolved connection issues.

Most definitely - hard-wired network will give you stability benefits, especially when streaming hi-resolution content.
As to running a network cable - you are OK with runs up to 100 meter. Is routing around skirting boards an option?

After a re-think I'm now planning to buy a new Linksys router/modem and switch and move the router and US into the room where the NDX is, to more easily enable hard wire connections (and hope the other devices will be OK wireless). Regarding cables, I assume I need one from the router to the ADSL, 1 from the switch to the router, 1 from the NDX to the switch and 1 from the US to the switch. Sorry for such basic questions, but is that correct?

The basic connection is:

  1. Modem provided by your ISP > ethernet cable > wireless router
  2. Wireless router > ethernet cable > switch
  3. All devisec (US, NDX) connect via ethernet cable to switch

If yor modem provided by ISP has a wireless (most likely) you have two choices:

  • Add another wireless router like Apple (see step 1 above) - this tends to be a preferred solution
  • Use the built in one (in that case step 1 above does not apply)

just another thought, have the same issue of distance from NDX to router

I moved the NAS into same room as NDX and then connected NAS directy to NDX and then switch from NAS to network link - works very well and NDX is direct into NAS - just used a Netgear GS 105

This is actually a wrong way of doing it....

Adam - it works for me - it also avoided drop out of signal which i was getting - ROUTER - DEVELO - SWITCH - NAS - NDX UPnp Iradio Tidal all work perfectly and control through NAIM app

OK, as I assumed, though it means I need 3 decent ethernet cables (have 1 already). I was planning to get the Linksys XAC1900 with built-in modem for ease of set-up (hopefully)...

Cheers,

Neil

You are not with Virgin, are you? If so, get an Asus.

No, Utility Warehouse currently, with a basic Belkin modem/router. The dealer from which I got the NDX recommended the Linksys, so thought it worth a try before dem-ing a PS or the NDAC...

Cheers,

And that's all that matters really as long as it works
