What was the last concert you went in 2016?

Posted by: Richard Dane on 17 January 2016

A new year, and have been to my first concert of 2016, so thought I should start a new thread.

Peter Stark conducting the RCM Philharmonic Orchestra playing Elgar's Enigma Variations at the Royal College of Music in South Kensington.

You don't often get the opportunity to hear The Engima Variations played live and I'm pleased to say that for the most part the RCM Phil played well.  They pretty much nailed the centre piece of Nimrod, although in other parts the timing was a little off and the charming Dorabella variation missed the sprightly balletic touch that you would find from a master such as Monteux conducting the LSO in their prime.  But that's a huge ask of what is such a young and inexperienced orchestra, so overall a wonderful, if rather short, concert, and a great start to the 2016 concert season.

Jaap Van Zweden/CSO + Christiane Karg/Michael Nagy

Program:
Mozart Masonic Funeral Music

Wagner Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde

Brahms  German Requiem

Christiane Karg made a CSO debut with German Requiem at the Orchestra Hall. When she entered the hall, I was shocked to see how *tiny* she is. ( even shorter than van Zweden! )

I was curious about how she's going to pull off Isolde but alas, Liebestod was orchestrated version without any vocal.

CSO sounded unusually bright and lightweight for both Mozart and Wagner pieces and former lacking in transparency and polish and the latter was malnourished with an anorexic Isolde! I suspect part of acoustic problem was they cleared the back terrace to accommodate CSO chorus so the house was relatively empty on the back of the stage with a lot of reflective surfaces exposed.

In contrast, Brahms' Requiem fared much better. Less bright and much better balanced tone. Both Karg and Nagy's voices carried above excellent 100+ Chicago chorus. Perhaps not as *human* and expressive as Muti's reading but I enjoyed Zweden's precise and compact style.

Program

Mozart Masonic Funeral Music
Wagner Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde
Brahms A German Requiem

Go Go Penguin at The Ritz in Manchester last week.  Big homecoming gig for them, so less intimate than some of the previous venues I have seen them in, but still a cracking gig and definitely worth the trip down from Newcastle.

I was treated to tickets to the Royal Albert Hall last night to see ‘Classics Spectacular’. A montage of popular classics performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and others. A fabulous evening with a rousing finale of 1812. Hugely impressed by the violinist, Thomas Gould. The adjective spectacular was throughly justified. I highly recommend it.

Had this evening a good concert with Arabella Steinbacher and the Oslo Philharmonic. Violin Concerto of Mendelssohn and after the break Prokofiev Suites Romeo & Julliet. Arabella is great she has a warm type of tone and of course also the required virtuosity, her best parts where the playful parts of the concert. The Prokofiev was very very good......, so a nice concert evening. With a signing session .....

Paul Simon in Dublin last night, in O2, or 3 or whatever it is now, lets call it The Point. Great music making, surprisingly good sound given my past experiences at this (and most) venues. Restored my faith in going to a Rock (as opposed to Classical) concert!

Royal Festival Hall, Wednesday 23rd November:-

Excellent Beth Hart gig. She has a great bluesy voice, drummer and bassist also good guitarist a bit off at times.

We left before the encore to make sure we could get home, and managed without resort to a taxi.

Why is it that  ****wits have to go to gigs, talk, film, keep getting drinks and then go to the toilet?

Julia Fordham at St Georges, Brandon Hill, Bristol on Thursday 24/11. Despite the lights and PA failing twice, Julia delivered a most enjoyable show.

Saw Rudolf Buchbinder with the Bamberger Symphony Orchestra. Program was Mozart Trauermusik, Rachmaninow Tanze and Brahms Piano Concert....

Before the break was great and also strange as they had Mozart flowing into Rachmaninov, but it worked.

the piano concert was decent, but not great. Actual the symphony orchestra was the star, Buchbinder didn't impress me.

Tomorrow Khatia with Schumann Piano Concerto in Munich. Looking forward to that one....

Buchbinder strikes me as a good technician but not a great artist. A few years ago he substituted for Andsness playing Beethoven and I have seen him play Mozart  PC No. 24  but it was just okey. Nothing special. He was slated for one of this season's subscription but I've exchanged the ticket for something else. Chicago audience seems to love him, tho.

Who was the conductor of the orchestra?

I hope you enjoy Khatia's Schumann. ( oh poor piano.  :/ )

The conductor was Jakob Hrusa, unknown to me but he did a good job. I would echo your feedback, it's not that it was bad - I just missed emotion from Buchbinder. To a friend I wrote that it was a B Concert, which is I think the right indication.

Khatia has a special piano made of special strong materials, she was piano tester in another life.....

Looking very much forward to this evenings concert with Khatia Buniatishvili and the Tscechishe Philharmonie Prag in Munchen. The program will be:

Dvorák: „Othello“ – Ouvertüre op. 93
Schumann: Konzert für Klavier und Orchester a-moll op. 54
Dvorák: Symphonie Nr. 7 d-moll op. 70

A blistering gig from the Wedding Present, still as vital as ever. Much more enjoyable than I expected.

He was a director for Nicola Benedetti's excellent Bruch disc and I recall how impressed I was with his orchestration.
Listen to this CD. He's really good! It's interesting to note that in concerto, orchestration is just as important as a soloist to make a great performance.

I am looking forward for his CSO debut next year.

Khatia was in a great form this evening. She delivered an exciting Schumann, and I was again impressed by her ability to even go into extreme dynamics when called for. She had two encores, and overwhelming one and a quiet one. After the break the orchester continued with Dvorak 7, which was also enjoyable....., so another great evening in Munich.....

Just back from a Schubert Sonatas recital from Daniel Barenboim, I liked it while not perfect, played with the right way of sensitivity etc

Bert,

Did he play on a Barenboim piano?

Yes I think so while I am not 100 percent sure. Reasons to believe...

1. Sounded different than a usual suspect

2. I didn't see the usual Steinway and Sons plate

3. He was a couple of evenings in the venue...

Last night I went to Lucinda Drayton's Christmas concert at Kew.  A small and intimate gathering at a beautiful venue.  It has been quite a few years since her hit song 100,000 angels, but her voice is as fine as ever it was.
