What was the last concert you went in 2016?

Posted by: Richard Dane on 17 January 2016

A new year, and have been to my first concert of 2016, so thought I should start a new thread.

Peter Stark conducting the RCM Philharmonic Orchestra playing Elgar's Enigma Variations at the Royal College of Music in South Kensington.

You don't often get the opportunity to hear The Engima Variations played live and I'm pleased to say that for the most part the RCM Phil played well.  They pretty much nailed the centre piece of Nimrod, although in other parts the timing was a little off and the charming Dorabella variation missed the sprightly balletic touch that you would find from a master such as Monteux conducting the LSO in their prime.  But that's a huge ask of what is such a young and inexperienced orchestra, so overall a wonderful, if rather short, concert, and a great start to the 2016 concert season.

Bert,

Did he play on a Barenboim piano?

Yes I think so while I am not 100 percent sure. Reasons to believe...

1. Sounded different than a usual suspect

2. I didn't see the usual Steinway and Sons plate

3. He was a couple of evenings in the venue...

Thanks.

How does his piano sound compared to the usual Steinway?

I see he's got a new album out:

I think it sounds better than a Steinway, rounder in the highs - but have a listen for yourself on the album, I feel in a position to comment on audio systems, but feel less confident on comparing a piano

At the concert of Alison Balsam with television recordings. Never was at a classical trumpet concert - have not a high expectation, so I can only be surprised

So got early at home. Not because she was playing bad, but just not my cup of tea. I already thought that this one would be the challenging one in the series of then concerts.....and it was...

A blistering gig from the Wedding Present, still as vital as ever. Much more enjoyable than I expected.

The only band I have seen more often than I can remember (starting from the time when they actually played encores...) Seeing them next year at The Roundhouse.

Neeme Jarvi/CSO & Vadim Gluzman

Program:
Glazunov Concert Waltz No. 1

Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1

Sibelius Suite from Karelia

Sibelius Symphony No. 5

The venerable old maestro lead the CSO with a rhythmic flair with a translucent polished tone. A head of the *Jarvi * musical dynasty, the old man still has it. ( I much prefer him over Paavo )

First time listening to Gluzman live and he sure did not disappoint. ( I love his Bruch piece ) A mixture of technical excellence with a hint of schumultz wrapped in a bold and warm tone. Loved it! He was not afraid to to out on a limb on a difficult and extremely percussive Prokofiev piece yet can also provoke a sweet and tender emotion.

Michael Tilson Thomas/CSO & Gautier Capuçon

Stravinsky Scènes de ballet
Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 33
Prokofiev Suite from Romeo and Juliet

I love whenever MTT comes around to Chicago as he alwys bring some interesting short tunes that have been played for a long time. Stravinsky's Scenes de Ballet was just such tunes where last time it was played at the Orchestra Hall was back in 1945. Commissioned by Billy Rose back in 1944 as he was getting into a *High art* from vaudeville acts. I dont think these were Stravinsky's best work per se yet full of wit and heavily borrowed Hollywood and Copland-esque Americana with unmistakable Stravinsky's signature riffs and chord progressions embedded into the tunes making them not so *straight*. Like how he altered Star-Spangled Banner with dominant 7th chord. ( how cool would be to be played at US Presidential inauguration! )

Capcon's Sain-Saens was much more involving than listening to a record due to sitting so close to the soloist I could even hear him breath! His cello had a dry tonal quality which served well for his modern style. The orchestra served his performance nicely neither overpowering nor turning into a wall paper.

I must say I am not much fan of Romeo and Juliet but prefer Prokofiev's rendition over overly schmaltzy and overplayed Tchaikovsky's version. I just think that Prokofiev version sounds a bit more sophisticated. Dance of the Knights live was just great throwback of the 90s. ( it was used in the *in*famous Chanel Egoiste spot)

Status Quo at Leeds last Saturday for The Last Of The Electrics Tour.  Sadly no Rick Parfitt as he isn't fit enough but they still rock like no-one else. Headbanging and air guitar by a pensioner may not be pretty to an outsider but I couldn't care less. At least I do still have a fair amount of hair...

The only irritant was all the would-be Martin Scorseses with their bleedin' iPhones. Why not watch the band they've paid so much to see instead of making a wobbly crap video they'll watch once and then forget about? Are they so addicted to the thing they can't think of not using it?

We saw Rossini's Barber of Seville at the Vienna State Opera in the week leading up to Christmas. Whether that counts as a concert I'm not sure.
