What was the last concert you went in 2016?
Posted by: Richard Dane on 17 January 2016
A new year, and have been to my first concert of 2016, so thought I should start a new thread.
Peter Stark conducting the RCM Philharmonic Orchestra playing Elgar's Enigma Variations at the Royal College of Music in South Kensington.
You don't often get the opportunity to hear The Engima Variations played live and I'm pleased to say that for the most part the RCM Phil played well. They pretty much nailed the centre piece of Nimrod, although in other parts the timing was a little off and the charming Dorabella variation missed the sprightly balletic touch that you would find from a master such as Monteux conducting the LSO in their prime. But that's a huge ask of what is such a young and inexperienced orchestra, so overall a wonderful, if rather short, concert, and a great start to the 2016 concert season.

Glad you enjoyed him Bev, I'm a great fan. SWMBO bought two tickets for this & we planned to have a nice long weekend up in London, with a good restaurant booked. Then, on Friday night, I went down with a severe tummy bug & I was too ill to go! What an absolute p*sser!

Bert, are you in Baden Württemberg Lander? I see the araldica on the main balcony.

No I live myself close to Nurnberg. And most of my piano recitals and concertos I see in Munich. So it's all in Munich and this is the Prinz Regententheater in Munich.
Sorry, my mistake. I've not see well the details
Magic Flute at the ENO London last night, for quite an unusual production, most of which worked well. As you may be able to see from my typically blurry photo, the orchestra was raised so that they were visible throughout the performance.
Of the singers the Pamina of Lucy Crowe was probably the standout.
On the way in we were approached by members of the ENO Chorus, who are fighting a proposed 25% pay cut; we signed a petition in their support.

Kula Shaker - Roundhouse. Wednesday 17th Feb. Short but sweet set mainly tracks from the latest album and their first excellent album.
Just returned from seeing the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Grams do a Copland and Gershwin program. The guest pianist was a gentleman named William Wolfram. Even though the are not necessarily one of the bug name outfits in the USA they did a very nice job and it was an enjoyable evening at the Belk Theater.
Massive Attack, Tonhalle, Munich 21 Feb
I bought the tickets a while ago and was not sure what to expect having read some lukewarm reviews from the earlier dates on this tour. Needn't have worried...was a great night. Also think their new material holds up well to all but their very best.
Was also blown away by the support act, Young Fathers. Raw energy, an absolutely outstanding live performance. Up with the very best I have seen in the past couple of years out here.
Friday 12th, This Is This Is Not Heat at Café Oto, Dalston. This was Hayward and Bullen's first gig together in something like 34 years, and a host of avant-garde luminaries (Thurston Moore, Chris Cutler, Alexis Taylor, etc) turned up to help them along. It was pretty amazing, and on "24 Track Loop", they unleashed the power of Can.

TOTO, Stockholm, friday 19th.
Old boys having fun on stage, good show !!
Another concert last night at the RCM in South Kensington. Mozart's overture to Don Giovanni followed by Dvorak's Symphony no.9 "New World Symphony". Slower paced than I'm generally used to from many recordings, and a little ragged in the second movement, but understandable considering most were performing the piece for the very first time.
Oh and I got to rub shoulders with that master of the 'tache, Professor Robert Winston who is the RCM's chairman.

Nice to see another from NC on the forum. My daughter plays in three NC symphony Orchestra's. Please support them all and other great Orchestra's across the planet. A memorable one for me was the LSO at the Barbican 2012.
Salonen/CSO + YoYo Ma
Beethoven Overture to King Stephen
Lutosławski Symphony No. 3
Salonen Foreign Bodies
Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1
Terrific concert today! Salonen's Foreign Bodies was a premier performance at the Orchestra Hall and nothing beats 100+ musicians playing in unison at a full blast. Played after Lutoslawski piece, it was apparent that the piece was strongly influenced by the Polish composer.
Lutoslawski Symphony NO.3 was commissioned by CSO and was premiered by Solti back in 1983. Salonen gave a fresh outlook to the King Stephen by giving a taught punchy rhythmic flair. CSO musicians today was really *on*. I have never seen them on their toes and did not skip a beat.
Ma showed the virtuosity throughout but the best bits was how he played a whisper level *monologue* with tension showing a quiet yet powerful emotions. Listening to him a few feet away also was a treat as i could literally feel the energy. Tone of Ma's cello had a rather dry and brighter balance compared to the rest of cellist in the band.
Was yesterday at a concert of the Dutch/Italian grandmaster Marco Borsato in the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. It was a memorable concert one which shouldn't have ended in a way. The venue is also perfect for this kind of concert. Good video show and of course a perfect concert with an orechestra.
i will place some pictures / or videos later today when I am back home.
As promised some pictures to the concert...
Field Music, last evening at The Duchess, York.
Exceptional live band, catch them if you can during their present tour.
Dave.

Kuma, this looks a very interesting programme, I have Simon Rattles fine recording of Lutoslawski 2nd Symphony but am very tempted by Salonen’s recording of the complete Lutoslawski Symphonies which are available here at the bargain price of £9.
We went to 'The War of the Worlds' at the Dominion, Tottenham Court Road on Saturday 27th. It was an absolutely brilliant event with most performances better than the original. Highly recommended.
The cult at Nottingham rock city last night
Awful performance by an arrogant front man. Sound of the room was flat and the crowd were dead
Other than that great night (wasn't good at all)
Sorry to hear that Yorkslad. They are in Birmingham tonight and I was tempted, but couldnt get on with their latest album so I gave it a miss. Ill get a report tomorrow off one of my mates who still went to see if his experience ties up with yours.
I spent an evening in London at the RCM listening to a concert of works by John Cage, Steve Reich, John Adams and others. At times it was challenging but the skill of the musicians and the kernel of brilliance behind each piece was never in doubt. Most enjoyable.
As an aside, and speaking of John Cage, those who remember the old entrance to the Naim factory may recall the large sign that hung there as a reminder and inspiration to everyone who passed it daily; it was a quote by John Cage that went thus;
Let no one imagine that in owning a recording he has the music.
WNO Marriage of Figaro last night at Birmingham Hippodrome, which is possible my favourite Mozart opera, the second act finale is a miracle of musical invention.
The Cult, at Leeds Beckett University last night.
Astbury in fine form, Duffy pulling major shapes all night, the other band members top notch.
Read some reports, as above, that they had been less than great elsewhere, but they didn't disappoint at Leeds.
Oh.........and it was satisfyingly LOUD!
Dave.
So it was this evening Phronesis for me. They played in a small venue and I was in the first row - only two meters away from the guys. Quite exciting concert, with a bit overbalanced to the drummer, but I enjoyed. And it's funny that it is still possible to be at a concert and only spent 21 euros. 16 euros to get in, 5 euros for two colas...
some pictures which will give you an impression of how close I was...
