Tagging Right
Posted by: blownaway on 17 January 2016
I'm sorting out my music collection before it's transferred to my nas.
So my basic (naive) question is....
If simply change the name of the folder, and the music files do not change does this change the tag somehow or the way it looks when loaded on the Naim software?
If you tag consistently the same everywhere do multiple albums of an artist show up individually or is there just one folder for each artist and the albums are listed below the artist's name?
There is no need to organize my file tree on my nas because my music get's organized automatically by the tag's I have for each song, correct?
Thanks!
My personal opinion is that the first thing to get to grips with is the library software on your NAS, as the Naim software will only report what it sees so it's important to get to understand what your NAS library software that offers you in terms of structure, playlists, tagging etc. The Naim software doesn't change/interpret anything as I understand it.
How the albums show on the Naim app is entirely down to the tagging. You can call an album 'banana' on the nas file structure and it will make no difference.
For the file structure, you should have a folder for each artist, and put the albums in it.
How they show on the Naim app can be changed depending on which upnp server you use. I use the excellent Minimserver. You can see all albums at the top level, or have them grouped by artist, genre or other alternatives. Say you want to find your Miles Davis albums - you could choose artist at the top level, or you could first go to jazz and then artist. It's up to you.
The key thing is to get the metadata right. But don't worry - once it's on the nas, if you find a mistake (and you will!) you can still edit it using dbpoweramp. Just ensure that the nas is mapped on the network and you can use your computer to edit directly on the nas.
would also advise on music source either from ripping a CD or purchased music with Mettadata, purchased music does sometimes need aditional tags added to ensure they can be read by App or server- but as HH says you can change this on NAS if needed
While the organization of the albums will be completely show up according to the tagging you choose. It's not unwise to have some kind of own structure to find your files. If your collection grows you will find out that a good structural organization sometimes is a benefit.

Thanks, that's what I'm planning too do. I'm installing Minimserver. For now I'm trying to prep my files/folders with correct tagging BEFORE I install on to my nas. I'm sure their will be more tweaking once it lands on my nas but at least most of the work will have been done.
So far I'm running every file through a program called SongKong & dbpoweramp's PerfectTune.

Interesting, I was hoping this was the case. Some of my music is labeled the year it was burned, artist name, catalog number, name of album, ect ect...
If it's all down to tagging consistently then I'll re-tag everything so it is the same for each song.
I'm also checking every song through accuraterip.
I run multiple albums through SoundKong software which will edit tags automatically to however I like. I kept the default setting. I assume this is good.
here are other format choices from drop downs....
After SongKong they go through dbpoweramp's PerfectTune for album art & accuratrip verification.
Sound good?

Good point, for now I'm going to focus on the proper tags & album art.
