Next step in system upgrade

Posted by: Mike Woodcock on 18 January 2016

Having just got my UnitiServe up and running, I'm interested in views on the next step in my system upgrade.  Current setup:

 - UnitiServe

 - UnitiQute 2

 - Nap 100

 - Dali Mentor Menuet

Ultimately, my plan is for the UQ, NAP 100 and Dali's to be my system in the study, and to have a full size NAIM setup in the living area.  However, I can't do it in one step!  I am probably looking at individual components of c£2-3000 each.  So what's the first item I buy?  Do I upgrade the power amp, put the NAP 100 on ice for a few years, swap out the U/Q for a Uniti2 (but I don't need the CD Player) etc? Basically, where do I get the best bang for my buck in the next upgrade, whilst maintaining future upgradability?

How about

Step 1: Superuniti. Put the UQ and Nap 100 away for now.

Step 2: Add NAP250DR to Superuniti.

Step 3: Sell Superuniti and buy NAC272. Use SU money to help fund new speakers. Bring UQ and NAP 100 out of retirement. You now have 2 systems.

Step 4: Add XSP DR

Step 5: Stop (or don't)

Try to buy second hand or ex demo to keep the costs down.

Working on the basis that you are aiming for a 272/250, to avoid redundancy I'd do the following.

Get a 272 and use it with the 100. Put the Qute in the study and pick up some super-cheap little secondhand speakers for £200 or less. That gets you two systems straight away.

Then get a 250 DR, possibly selling the 100 as it won't be needed in the study and it doesn't really improve what the Qute does by itself.

Get some bigger speakers and put the Dalis in the study.

How's that?

Thanks - I like HH's option that gets the UQ into the study from day 1 and ultimately gets me to the same place.

From the above 2 posts, I assume that a 272 is where I should be aspiring to?

Where you aspire to is entirely dependent on how good a sound you want, and how deep your pockets are. If your aim is less modest, a SuperUniti could be just the job. I used to have one and now have a 272/250, which is miles better. I was simply following the theme of the first response, but thinking that it would be more cost effective just to add the 272 to your 100, rather than getting an SU and then losing money when you sold it.

I'm a big fan of the 272/250, but there are other options out there that others prefer. In your situation though, with a spare power amp, it does seem a nice neat way to move forward in sensible steps with nothing wasted along the way.

HH's route makes sense to me and is similar to my path though so far I've gone UnitiQute and added a NAP200 with thoughts of moving to a NAC272-N / NAP200 setup in the future.

Agree with HH. I too went from SuperUniti to 272/250 and the difference is huge. Also the 272 is cheaper than the SU since you already have a power amp.

a 272 is cheaper still if I take my US back within 14 days and put that towards it...(HH already aware and following a post a streaming...)

That's what I would do. Drop me an email, I'll put my address in my profile.

My answer to the exact same problem was:

 - first, UQ sold and upgraded to NAC-172xs (bought ex dem)

 - then speakers sold (B&Ws in my case) and upgraded to ATC SCM11s

 - then NAP100 sold and upgraded to NAP200 ( non-DR, bought ex dem)

At each point the system remained relatively in balance, and where I am now it sounds superb. By getting second hand and ex dem, I'm able to sell on if I choose to without too much pain.

If I were to upgrade from here, I would get a 272 and then a 250DR probably, but I honestly don't feel the need. Don't under-estimate the 172xs - it's a very nice piece of kit indeed, and a sensible upgrade on the Qute.

Also, personally, and recognising other views are available, I'd take back the Unitiserve anyway, and buy a good 'third party' NAS from QNAP or Synology. Take that money and put it towards kit or more music.
