Glass shelves and the appearance of image!

Slight play on words there, sorry, couldn't help it. I've just replaced the wooden shelves that came with the cabinet that contains my amps with 10mm toughened glass. To be honest the main reason was to improve the looks (image..see?) and to gain an extra shelf in capacity. So, I think it does look much nicer and I have my extra shelf. The unexpected gain was in imaging. There was a change in sound quality, an improvement I think, but not night and day. But the change in the ability to place the position of different instruments and voices is quite startling. Best £100 upgrade I've ever made. So, SWMBO is happy and so am I. Am unusual outcome in this hobby.

I had a very similar experience and the addition of 3 ball bearings underneath similar to Fraim just enhanced the benefits.

What are your shelves mounted on?

Just on plastic cabinet blocks for the moment. Pondering the best type of bracket to facilitate using ball bearings or spikes. Although the cabinet they are in will only allow a side to side, 4 point, style support, which makes levelling more difficult. So I'm erring towards adjustable spikes.

Why not leave the original shelves in place and mount the glass above on the 3 ball bearings?

I used spike shoes to locate the balls but many on here have used castellated nuts or just ordinary nuts to good effect.

Take a look at my profile and you'll see what I've done.

The original shelves are framed and too deep. That was one of the main reasons for changing. That and looks.
