NaimUniti - Streaming issue with NAS Lacie2Big Network
Posted by: RichardV on 25 May 2011
Hi ,
A few months ago, I have bought a NaimUniti and it is a really fantastic product. However, I have tried to get access to my iTunes music stored on my NAS through UPnP, but without any success. The message is "No server found".
Here is my configuration:
- NaimUniti
- NAS LaCie 2Big Network
- iMac
- MacBook pro
- PC
I have controled that the UPnP is allowed on my NAS, it is ok, but the Uniti does not find any server.
What would you recommend me to do ?
Thanks in advance.
Richard
Depends on many things
Your UPnP server - what is it?
Your router - DCHP or fixewd IP for Nas/Uniti - firewalls?
LaCie are not always the friendliest of beasts - spec sheet only says "UPnP A/V and DLNA Media Adapter compatible" - it does have an Itunes DAAP server - which won't do UPnP obviously.

I really do not know what is my UPnP server. I thought that it was integrated within the NAS. The only thing I know is the spec available on the internet : http://www.lacie.com/download/...al/UM_2bigNW2_EN.pdf They say on page 20 "
When connected to the network (Ethernet) and to networked computers or UPnP/DLNA-certified players/adapters (if UPnP service is activated)

Moeover, the LaCie support says the following: http://www.lacie.com/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10477&article=1403. They do not say anything regarding a specific UPnP server to install.
To answer your question regarding my router, I am quite sure that it is DHCP but I have to control it. I have no issue to connect any other machine on this router. Morevoer, iRadio on the NAIM runs very well.
Thanks
Richard
Richard……If the Uniti is not seeing the server it would be worthwhile checking or resetting your music folder. Page 32 of the User Manual (from the link you posted) explains the procedure of how this is done. You must tell the device which folder/share you wish to enable UPnP to share.

A couple of things, and the first is a digression
You have placed your itunes music folder only onto the NAS, and have a DAAP server dishing back to itunes on your network (any other way will eventually lead to tears)
And regards the uniti.
NASes will indeed share via UPNP but usually on specific shares. For instance the lacie might have a music share where you need to store the music in order for it to be shared. If you have created a new share or banged it in public or something then it might not be shared.
Finally if the uniti is not seeing a share at all, then most likley the UPNP is not enabled on the NAS. Its unlikely to be an issue of the router. A routers UPNP is typically there to enable you to use ddns from the outside etc and will not relate to UPNP on the LAN.
Finally a NAS is in essence a small form factor computer, a lot of the time running linux. The one you have there is a bit on the weedy side with a 400mhz processor and 64megs of ram. Uglier units are available but they will have a much better spec. This might not effect you or be related to the issue you are suffering, but certainly the lower the spec the slower it will be and come the time to stream hidef audio or video whilst doing other tasks with it you may come unstuck
Also a review on smallnetbuilder says this which may be your problem:
'According to LaCie, the 2big network device is a fairly barebones NAS by design. It doesn’t have any built-in media servers such as a DLNA-compliant server for music/video/photos or an iTunes server. Nor does it have the features of a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server that would allow it to function as a web server. '
The LaCie 2BIG does indeed have a Upnp server built in (not enabled by default), Page 32 of the pdf manual you linked to in your post explains how to turn on the Multimedia Upnp server function that is included with the 2BIG.
I believe this unit is one of naims tested NAS drives that passes the test tool.
Many thanks for your comments and ideas, it is great ! I will try some of your solutions, let's hope that it will fix my issue.
Tanks again.
euh just an additional question: do you think I should install a third-party UPnP/DLNA Media Server on the LaCie, such as iSedora or EyeConnect ?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
