Naim Choice

Posted by: Paul Stephenson on 25 May 2011

We will  be releasing Naim Choice tonight on Uniti, Qute and NDX  but with one small GUI bug – it shows 57k AAC for Radio 3 and Radio Paradise 320kbps AAC streams.  We have extensively tested and its working at 320k but the GUI bug reports it incorrectly

Rather than delay we thought we would release Naim's Choice now as there is so much interest, let us know what you think and any ideas for more stations which sound great with good music and minimal advertising and we will let this list grow. We do have some from the early list we collated.

Thanks Paul,

My breath is suitably bated and I'm looking forward to the feature.

Prepare for the avalanche of e-mails from around the world with recommendations!!

You might have to start a separate forum topic on that alone.

If we get to discover something good Jon then that is good news, might go the other way

Second that Neil.

Hearty congratulations to all at Naim for this feature.

Paradise sounds fantastic and I'll be checking out the other recommendations later today - before hopefully posting some of my own.

I thought it would be hard to add anything to the Uniti's functionality - but this does it with elegant simplicity.

Thanks again.

Yes well done,

I've  criticised enough, so credit where credit is due.

Don't want to hijack but if buffer goes low and the station pops in and out, is this a wireless network issue that WA5 would cure?

Hooray!! It's here.

Not necessarily - it could well be that there is enough contention around you from other wireless networks that they are strangling your throughput and in that case adding a WA5 would likely make little or no difference.

Do you get the same issue if you hard wire the unit back to your router?

I listen to RP everyday for 8-10 hours during work and at times in the evenings and weekends.  The sound is so much better.  Thanks Naim!

I got the same issue on the Pink Floyd station that's not HD, but didn't get it when playing the 320K stations, so it could simply be beyond our domestic network.

BBC3HD seems OK at around 90% buffer all the time so it is probably some other factor.

Hard wire the router and UniQute? Sleep in the spare bed!

Basically there are many points in the chain that could be causing issues (and not all of them within your or our control) ... the only way to start to diagnose is to work backwards and see what can be done.

The Uniti / UnitiQute / NDX (I'll use "Uniti" from here on but it applies to all three) are all more than capable of replaying 320kbits audio streams via WiFi however they don't have PC quantities of memory to use for buffering so we buffer about 3 seconds worth of audio which allows for most fluctuations.

Should you be having dropout issues on Internet Radio or UPnP streaming over WiFi then the first check I would suggest would be to run an Ethernet cable between the Uniti and your router and see whether that clears the issue, if it does then you have a problem with getting consistent WiFi traffic between your access point and the Uniti. I would now move the Uniti to a location as close to your wireless access point as possible and try streaming wirelessly again - if this works OK then it's likely that your issues are caused by physical issues within your property and it *MAY* be that using a WA5 will resolve the issue (however wireless networking is not guaranteed to work as it is so susceptible to external influences).

If placing the Uniti close to your access point doesn't resolve the issue then the chances are that you are getting external factors affecting your setup (maybe other wireless networks in close proximity stomping over your throughput) and those are going to be more difficult to resolve - maybe using something like "InSSIder" (a wireless network scanning tool for PCs) to find out what wireless networks are operating in range of your own and what channels they are on and then changing your own access points WiFi channel to a less congested range may help.

If hard wiring the Uniti to the router doesn't resolve the issue then the problem is going to be either your router (unlikely but possible) or your internet connection itself.

Obviously we all like to have nice fast broadband connections which are specced well in excess of what is needed for streaming Internet Radio but what you pay for (8meg, 24meg etc) isn't necessarily what you get so a testing tool such as www.speedtest.net can come in quite handy for determining the downstream and upstream speeds that you are *ACTUALLY* getting (I've seen many setups where customers are paying for 8meg and are getting much less than 1meg due to where they are relative to exchanges or the use of aluminium cabling to their property). Of course www.speedtest.net doesn't give you an indication of consistency of throughput or whether your ISP is filtering certain traffic (we've had instances of certain Asian ISPs severely throttling streaming audio traffic).

Hope this helps get you a bit further in resolving your issues...

Portuguese radio has NOITE FM which is 192kbs current modern mainstream and you could learn some Portuguese on the way.

On my uniti, I was listening to AVROKLASSICS after a few minutes it was impossible to tune or change volume. Remote and direct control, the uniti did not respond. Music still playing fine. I had switch off power and start again. Did anyone experience the same problem? Thanks
Posted on: 28 May 2011 by Arno

I had also the exact same issue with AVROKLASSICS and was forced to switch the Uniti off.
I haven't tuned back since to this station.

Posted on: 28 May 2011 by badlyread

I have had the same issue several months back on my Qute.

Naim Choice is a great idea. Unfortunately I am experiencing problems with it.  I select BBCradio3HD or BBCRadio4 and all I get is Folk radio! Any ideas what is going on? If I select Folk radio I get Folk radio again!

Any ideas? Thanks.

Posted on: 28 May 2011 by Rich27
Same here, if I try to select BBC Radio 3 then I get Folk Radio, ditto for Radio 4.  Not good enough!

Are you in the UK? The hi-res BBC streams are currently only available to UK listeners.
Posted on: 29 May 2011 by kassos

Yes I am in UK. apparently its not just me ???

Posted on: 29 May 2011 by Rich27

Yes UK too.

Er similar yet different problems - Radio 4 /3 comes up with no station and R Paradise seems stuck around 56 rather than 320 and stutters horribly. Tog
Posted on: 29 May 2011 by SteveH

Radio 3 and 4 AAC streams are currently down.  RP 128 and 320 working fine for me at present.  The 57k was explained by Paul above.

Posted on: 31 May 2011 by SteveH

Radio 3 and 4 AAC streams are back up.  They are experimental so I guess we must expect some outages occasionally.

Radio Paradise 320 is dropping in and out in this part of Wiltshire.
