Cricket Summer 2011

Well the summer started yesterday, well it did for me, the first test match.

My favourite player of recent years retired after the ashes victory, Collingwood, but I suspect has been ably replaced by Eoin Morgan.

There doesn't seem to be such a great interest in Sri Lanka, but despite two of their best bowlers retiring from test cricket Malinga and (all cricket for) Muralitharan, they still have one of the best battsman in the world.

If England have a very good summer they could end up as the number 1 ranked test side. Not so for one day cricket, but still they won the 20/20 world cup a year ago, so all is going pretty well. I think the poor showing in the one day world cup can was largely due to a silly itinerary in Australia, 7 ODIs! after they had done what they went there to do, and then only a week off before a 1 month tournament.

> Bell made a mistake - as he now admits - and the Indians did the old fashioned thing and their actions fall within the old spirit of cricket. Let's hope this becomes more the norm again.

+1

The behaviour of the Indian cricket team was magnificent; they are battling against the best England team in years and trying to maintain their status at the top, but that did not sway them from doing the right thing. I love the attitude of the Indian players; they even accept umpire's LBW decisions without a thousand replays.

Two great sides playing the greatest of all sports - yes England will win this match, but don't write off India - the remaining matches will be just as exciting.

A few years ago - there was a football match between Nottingham Forest and Leicester; Forest were 1-0 when the game was abandoned, At the start of the re-match, Leicester stood back and let Forest score so as not to gain an unfair advantage.

We need more of this in sport - more of this attitude in life. Perhaps lose the attitude of the Oracle CSO who once said it is not good enough to win, the other guy's got to lose.

Anyway, anybody want to buy some tickets for the fifth day?

All the best, Guy

The crowd had no idea about very much, including the laws of cricket - which is why they shouldn't have booed the Indians - not sporting behaviour...

You guys are far too nice to them. I agree with the end result of this but Boycott was right - the England players should have paid attention to the umpires and waited, and the crowd should have behaved themselves!

Wonderful performance yet again - best team on the planet? not 'arf

'eck we are good. 20/20 World Champs, Test no. 1. Well deserved; agressive and skilful cricket from a squad with depth and variety. Love it!

Can we try to win the occasional ODI on the back of this success? Dhoni was warming up his ODI batting and we have not exactly excelled at that form of the game recently.

In my lifetime I have never felt so good about English Cricket. Including a period when watching Botham take everyone on in my youth. Even Surrey are managing to not be bottom of everything this year. Great times.

Well I logged back into the forum just to complain about Bopara yesterday. Yes we won the game (T20 v India), but I honestly think had it been just down to him we would have scratched a few singles in the last over and been short.

His innings was like watching paint dry, except that paint doesn't look quite so worried while doing its drying thing.

I really did not think I would say this, but thank goodness for Samit Patel.

Bopara overshadowed again, gets virtually the same number of runs from balls as young Jonny but while Bairstow gets MOTM, Bopara's effort is whitewashed over. Not Mr Lucky is he?

All in all, not the worst Summer of cricket ever.

Surrey get promoted back to the 1st division AND win a cup.

England win everything.

What are the odds!?
