Source as good as UnitiQute?

I currently using my Qute as only a digital source. It feeds an external DAC ( Schiit Gungnir MB). I really like this configuration, except that it seems quite wasteful. I'd love to replace the Qute with something that is as good a digital transport.  I don't need to upgrade this, literally same quality would be great.  I want to move my Qute to my TV system where i would utilize it's excellent amp/dac

I have tried a Squeezebox Touch in place of the Qute, but the Qute is decidedly better.  Also tried a homebuilt PC directly to DAC, also not as good as the Qute feeding the digital.

I have 3 requirements- 1) local display/control with actual remote control, 2) ability to attach files locally on local USB port, 3) Around $1k USD new or used.

It looks like a Cambridge Audio CXN or Marantz NA8005 may fit the bill.

I'd love to just get a 172XS or ND5XS, but financially they are too much $$$.

Minus 1st requirement, Auralic Aries Mini fits the bill. It is the streamer done right!

I'd love to see Naim Take the Qute and strip out the DAC/Amp/Pre Amp functions and hit this price. I am not holding my breath

I live my work life on my cell phone/tablet so unfortunately requirement #1 is literally my #1 requirement. There are many good options if I drop it.

Thanks for suggesting the Aries Mini.  If they had put a local display on it and added a remote it would work.

Did you use a usb-spdif converter with the home computer? It makes quite a difference. The software as well.

While I can see your points if you were buying now... If you were to sell your UnitiQute would what you release be enough to buy something better?

I replaced mine with a Mac mini and Audirvana, never looked back because it's just brilliant into a good dac

Despite the redundancy issue, which I agree is a bit annoying, if you're happy with the existing arrangement, I'm struggling to think of a better plan than getting another Unitiqute for your other system. This gives you an all Naim setup, with a single control app for both rooms, and multiroom option. Alternatively, a Mac Mini would be a good option if you're happy to set it up yourself.

An ND5 XS would also be a great option - maybe you should just be patient and save up for one. You could sell your existing DAC and put the funds towards it too.

Getting another Unitiqute is probably the best solution.

The Gungnir DAC is going nowhere.  It is a huge improvement over the Qute DAC. If nobody here has tried Schiit's multibit technology it really makes music.  It is the closest thing I have heard to the realism portrayed by the CDX2 if not the driving presentation of the CDX2.

I did try USB from my dedicated music pc.  I run Daphile through a Wyred and into Gungnir.

BruBacca .. I trialled and bought the Schiit Yggdrasil about 2 months ago after a fairly extensive DAC review exercise lasting nearly 8 months .. the YGGY has been an excellent addition to the system.

Hey, i don't mean to hijack your post but can anyone who has experience compare the Naim DAC to the Schiit Gungnir multibit or Yggy. also it is my understanding that the gungnir is slightly warmer sounding. would you conquer?
