Melco - a second opinion

Posted by: Jonas Olofsson on 26 January 2016

Melco has been discussed before and to my understanding the conclusions differs. Still in the "getting to know each other" phase, I'm very pleased and impressed with the improvements so far.

The "black ink" and calm within the music (yes, very difficult to describe sound , in a foreign language even worse)...it sounds better...again.

I do look forward to explore high def music files together with my Melco N1Z, I have the feeling that what it does is a hard habit to break.

Highly recommended

Ingesting media was straight forward, left it running overnight. Library mounted inside NAIM app as N1A with a small icon of the Melco showing and it played back everything no problem.

Hi Dan,

I see from your profile that you previously owned a Unitiserve. Has the Melco been able ingest Naim rips? The WAV files have somewhat limited metadata which only presents properly with a Naim server.

Melco are exhibiting at the Bristol show next week and I'll definitely be visiting their room.

Hi Keith,

All WAV files from the US-SSD I ripped appear fine but as folder view rather than normal. You are right that the way US rips the metadata it is really only visible via the NAIM Server app but in both N1A and my NAS running Minimserver I can see all the rips and album track list but via Folder view. Will look again mind and see what I can dig out.

Hi Dan - check out the Melco Audio site (in the support section) which gives instructions for integrating the Melco with Naim ripping products.

Hi James, yes downloaded now reading next, although my US-SSD is now sold so I have the rips left. In folder view I can see the album artwork and track listing from the WAV rips done on that US.

Thanks James,

it's in the download section of the website. It seems you promote  the Melco to a Store on the DTC and the Naim rips can be copied over. You can continue to use the Unitiserve  to rip to the Melco, although that seems a bit extravagant.

I'll try this but as I don't have the US anymore does the DTC open without a US IP address I can't remember? Can I create a Store on the Melco manually and drop the US RIPs into that store? Would be pretty handy if it did and then acted as if it was a US on the NAIM app with all the metadata etc.

The DTC won't function without a US on your network. Can you borrow a US from your dealer? Then you could convert your library to FLAC for use on a non-Naim server, then metadata should be accessible. (You can always convert back to WAV afterwards if you prefer it.)
