which expensive hi- fi Rack ?

Posted by: wenger2015 on 28 January 2016

I have been spending some serious money just recently, Sopra2 's, Nap 250 Dr, Nac 282, hi cap, Tq ultra blacks...dedicated power supply....thanks to my son in law, qualified electrician and all round genius, that cost me nothing.

So I now contemplate another major expense, do I buy an expensive  Naim fraim or another really expensive Rack?

Do the merits of high-end hi fi require nothing but the best?

Are their more economical alternatives?

Would appreciate the thoughts from the forum and your recommendations?

I've edited the last few posts.  May I remind members that commercial links are strictly forbidden in the Hifi Corner.  If you are unfamiliar with forum rules then please read them now before posting any further. Also, please try to ensure that quotes are kept to a minimum.  I tried reading this thread on an iPhone and it was virtually unreadable due to so many quotes upon quotes.  Thanks

Sorry, wasn't aware of that rule. Will not happen again. I'm not affiliated to them, just a customer who bought a rack some years ago.

...I popped down to my local Ikea and for just over £40 bought a Besta tv stand for the main stuff... and believe it or not its amazing.

Literally just that, gear directly on the Bestå? Any photos? How'd you get on with cable dressing?

Maybe it's a slight digression from expensive racks, but if it works, it's good to spread the word.

Considering the listening room looked a bit like your local hi-fi store, I'm glad that it did actually work, although I can't honestly understand why? I'm contemplating drinking a cup of tea stood on the kitchen table, just to see if it tastes better.....lol

I think I can safely assure you Wenger that, providing you are wearing your spiked running shoes, it will  taste better... I've tried it.  The only downside was that our kitchen table is wooden... this enhanced the taste, but the spikes detracted from the finish of the table.

Good point - we don't want gratuitous quoting

I use my iPhone for most posts and the process of minimizing the quoted material is a real pain in the rear.

So do I - it's a real pain - but the multiple quotes are a nightmare to follow too.

Agree, ( decided to minimise comments).

Multile quotes bring back distant memories of my (computer) programming days... representative of 'do while' loops.

Bloomin' confusing then and still bloomin' cofusing now

Finite Elemente Pagode in Maple

it will have contrast with your black Naim gear

till today, this Finite Elemente  rack design still amaze me. they are hold by 4 points thru the sharp cone against the main frame

Again will have to do some more research, is it made up of glass shelves  or wood?

 Thanks for the suggestion

None of the available Hifi Racks has a look I like - no matter how expensive they are, also Fraim and Fraimlite are not really my taste from an aesthetic perspective.

So a good friends of mine who is a product designer and me decided to develop our own modular rack system: We evaluated multiple materials and designs. I have the racks at home now for about one week and the sound is much better than my previous rack. Well, the previous rack was an Ikea Lack, so probably not too hard to beat

We have not yet reached the outstanding sound quality of a Fraim, but when comparing our self developed racks with the racks available at the local Naim dealer, we found that they outperform many of the available hifi racks.... will have some more evaluations of additional platforms and see where it leads us - definitely an exciting route to go

Very nice indeed - I really like the combination of white paint and cross ply. Looks very contemporary and much more up to date than the obvious rack choices. If you ever decide to manufacture more versions then please send me a PM !

Indeed this is the plan. I could not find your e-mail-address or a button to send PM, so I have added my e-mail-address to my profile... please feel free to contact me, cheers

Do you planning to use glass with your rack? Or are you unsure of the benefits...if any?

Sorry, should have said, are you planning to use glass with your rack?

Yes indeed we will evaluate glass, corian and other materials as additional platform with cups&balls  and see if they bring any benefits - yet the basis will stay plywood and maple
